Interesting grip. Welcome. Must be an out of stater or RAW I assume.

very cool. My father is doing something similar and modifying a G3 (Hk91) pistol grip for his Ak74 pattern.

If that was a bolt on part, like all the rest, I bet it would be a hit. Looks very very cool.

              Definitely not a Bolt-On part...

The MG42 Gripstick and Bakelite Gripset comes packaged ( and looks ) like this:

in order to make it "work" with the AK's Receiver, part of the top, front and rear of both the GripStick and the Bakelite Grips have to be trimmed, as well as part of the rear tang on the Gripstick itself..

              From this:

To something like this ( after much filing and fiddling..):

Final result ( almost 90% done at the time of this pic ):

That grip looks similar to the early AK 47's.

My intent was to mimic (as much as possible) the grip of the MP44.

I never liked the OEM AK grips, and most of the aftermarket plastic grips felt too "Tacticool" for my personal tastes on what looks OK on an AK platform...and besides, their ergos of the ones I did try were never quite right for me.

So, having run out of options on what was available, I decided to think "out-of-the-box". In doing so, I reverted to my all-time favorite grip, a PO8 Luger, and went about finding something similar.

I looked at MP40s, MP44s, MG34s..etc..All proved too exclusive, or unobtainable until I came across the MG42 package.

This last one fit my search parameters, in that it was the correct ergonomical shape, looked good (to me), was immediately available and was cost effective - All told I have about $50 worth of materials including shipping charges.

                            Thank you -

I have approximately 8 hours into it. (one fun-filled Saturday... )

Tools used were a hacksaw, handfiles and a bench vise.

I used a hacksaw and several different hand files because power tools can eat too much material suddenly if you are not careful... And with this retrofit, you have to get the angle exactly right in order to fit your particular (personal) wrist angle to the receiver. You also must match the mating surfaces to the reciver and existing trigger guard, and of course keep as much of the rear tang as possible.

This all means a Slooow, careful and methodical approach is necessary as you perform the surgery and remove material little bit by little bit following each "test fit" - This is a painfully slow method which is not helped by the fact that the Gripstick material is some kind of super-hard Steel alloy..

It ate Two new hacksaw blades in the process.

FYI; I purchased the Gripstick, Bakelite Gripset and two sets of Grip Screw and Nut from this site:

                              That's pretty badazz. Nice work.
