Just wondering if there's any difference between the styles. Is it just personal preference? Or are different models supposed to have different functions?

the 74 style brake is pretty much "the best" there are other that preform a little bit better but it's hard to justify the cost over the 74 brake. I personally did not have any issues running the slant brake. But I being poor, have only my dreams. I have spread my dreams under your feet. Tread softely, because you tread on my dreams. -
+1 to the 74 style. I know Battle comp is making one now which is supposed to be pretty good also, but also about 5 times the price.Sandstorm Custom Rifle Slings : Custom Paracord slings

The 74 style was better for muzzle control, but I wanted to keep the OAL as short as possible on it.

I found the Tapco AK74 style brake for 7.62x39 14x1 LH to be heavy.
I also have the MI brake on my Draco and do like it. The Ratworx one does look appealing too.
I run a slant brake on my Romney and it works just fine. And it's light weight.
Don't have and have never used a battle comp brake, but they are supposed to be solid. But that could also be marketing at work, that generally leaves a better impression than actual experience.

Why not throw in my two cents on the two most popular... But it's the same as others have said...
The standard AK slant brake is very short and light weight. That's good in some respects, but you basically don't feel it at all. When I fire my AK with a slant brake, I notice a huge amount of increased felt recoil. But on the other hand is the 74 style brake, which is long and very heavy, but it reduces felt recoil and does help reduce muzzle climb. It's really a trade off between length and weight vs. recoil and muzzle climb.ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕComment

I'm much sure different styles does have different effects on recoil. Like the other have said the type 74 appears to be the most effective. I myself bought a Tapco AR-15 Cage brake that I wanted to toy around with. What I will feel during recoil won't be as good as the 74 I'm sure but it is a brake.
Make no mistake the styles do differ and gettiing the most effective one is up to you. The designs in the brakes vary allot so you might buy a few and settle on one preference.
You might head to You Tube and get more visual info there before you make your final decision.

When buying an AK74 brake for a 7.62 rifle does the brake need to be specifically made for 7.62?
I want to order from Dinzag because they have the other parts I want for my Saiga, but the 74 brake that they have for my M24 threads does not specify caliber. I imagine that a brake for 5.45x39 on a 7.92x39 gun would be a bad thing."It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." -AristotleComment
