What I do is put a drop in front of the cam key and a drop behind, while working the bolt back and forth. Then while still working the bolt back and forth I put a couple drops into the gas-relief holes on the carrier, which goes down and lubricates the gas rings. This is easier than disassembling the carrier and lubricating the gas rings directly, but don't worry, they'll get the same amount of lubrication.

Then I put a drop on each side of the gas key, and a drop on each carrier rail (underside) and a drop on the bolt ramp. Then I take my finger and lightly smooth out the oil on the ramp and rails.

I will also put a drop of oil on the top and sides of the charging handle and work that in with my fingers. I stop doing that once the upper is "broken in" and the charging handle goes back and forth without that scraping sound of brand new anodizing on brand new anodizing

You should also put a drop of grease on the trigger and hammer sears, and the disconnector and hammer disconnector hook.

Takes about a minute or less to do all of this, and 30-seconds to re-apply to the BCG when you're in the field (the FCG will stay lubed with that grease for damn near forever).

You do that and your AR is properly lubricated and should not fail, as long as you use a QUALITY lubricant.

Stay away from CLP. It's not very good at any of the three things it claims to do. It's "compromise in a bottle".
I do essentially the same, but I use a grease on my charging handle. I used oil when I first had it all assembled, but after the first range trip, all the anodizing was pretty much gone. =(

The inconvenience of poor quality lingers long after the thrill of a good bargain.
