Need some feed back. They stopped making the 1917 in '54 so I think it might fall into the collectable catagory?? The only thing left of the original 1917 is the receiver and S/N. Five digit BTW. But.... because it's been modified does it need to go thru a FFL Dealer or will it qualify as a FTF?? Any info would be appreciated...

It all depends on when it was modified. If it was modified more than 50 years ago, it is still a C&R. They stopped making th 1917 action by the early 1920s at the latest. More likely they stopped making them when the WWI contract was cancelled. They went on to the Model 30 and Model 30 Express after they ran low on surplus receivers around 1921. Then they went to the 720, which was the last Enfield based action. They had stopped those by 1948. Unless you have some reason to think that the gun was modified in the last 50 years, I wouldn't stress about it. The caliber leads me to believe that it was likely a much older rebarreling. .300 H&H was already waning by the 1950s. The odds of somebody going through the trouble of modifying an Enfield to rebarrel it to that instead of .300 Winchester Magnum after 1962 (the magic 50 year date) are pretty slim.
