    Considering a 9mm or 7.62x39 AR build

Well, I've had this stripped multi-caliber lower sitting in my safe for a while now. Initially was going to do the 5.56 build, but started thinking about ammo prices and all. I just don't have the time to reload and I really don't have time to shoot that much (once a month if I'm lucky). Anyhow I've already started a .22lr build for fun cheap plinking. Now, I'm considering abandoning the 5.56 idea and going with a 9mm or 7.62x39 build to save a little cash down the road on ammo. Any suggestions from you guys that have these caliber builds? Which caliber (9mm or 7.62x39) would be the easiest to get parts, mags, etc.? Which would be more reliable (I've heard stories about the Wolf 7.62 stuff having failures to feed/eject). Or, should I just stick with the 5.56 and not worry about the cost of ammo so much as I'm not going to get to put that many down the pipe anytime soon? Anyhow, any thoughts, info., advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

How far out (in distance) are 9mm ARs fairly accurute (i.e., 100 yrds, 300 yrds)? Not into competition shooting, but like to keep it in the black as much as possible.

I built a 9mm using a RRA 9 block from 10 percent. One thing to be aware of is some of the C-Products 10rnd mags have follower problems (e.g.) bolt catch will not lock back. sollution e-mail or call C-Products directly they will send you Gen II followers at no charge. It fixed my problem As for 7.62x39, It is nearing .223 in price

If ammo prices are a concern, go with the 9. I went with an RRA build and love it. Check rockriverarms.com for a complete parts list. The 9 will also allow you to shoot in indoor ranges that don't allow rifle calibers.

It seems that 7.62x39mm parts are not the easiest to find. If you want to shoot it, buy a Saiga or an SKS. I love my 9mm AR15. All Rock River except for the new Spike's Tactical Fake Can and YHM rail.

Thanks for all your thoughts on this. Looks like 9mm will be the way I go.

Go 9mm, most indoor ranges that will not allow centerfire rifle ammo will allow a 9mm carbine.

After watching some video on here of a future weapon, i kinda want to build a 6.8 AR. You should look into that.

Any advantage of doing a midlength over a carbine? I like the shorter look, but does the midlength have anything to offer that I should consider? And besides RRA, what other uppers should I consider?

a 9mm oll sounds like fun. it would be nice to have a rifle that uses 9mm.

i usually shoot at insight shooting range in artesia.

has any shot an oll there?

Forget the 9mm. Go the 7.62x39. Its got some amazing punch and range that a 9mm won't give you. The parts are fairly easy to get from DPMS, Model1sales etc. Buy the new 10 round mags from Cproducts, buy a Wolff extra power hammer spring and do the bolt mod, and it should run 100%. You can blow concrete chunks into huge clouds of dust and blow through 1/2 mild steel. Awesome power. Fun to show up your friends with a 556.

I bring two uppers so I can play both sides.lol

BTW. The 7.62x39 upper is my most accurate rifle so far and it was also my first. I haven't tried it against my new 556 M4, but its gonna be close cause my 7.62mm upper is very accurate.

First of all I like Colt type setups..
Midlength has longer iron sight radius thats all, so more accurate with irons..

9mm has no gas tube so very easy to build if you get lucky and find a nice stripped barrel you can put it on any flattop A4 just take the pawl off the fwd assist button, don't NEED the gas deflector and special $165. upper!

Easy build with a free float tube!

I like my Hahn Precision dedicated block from Brownells..they also sell the complete RR setup including buffer, hammer and block with complete upper.

                              C products for the Mags!
