    wolf ammo

hey guys, i bought an lmt upper for its quality, durability, and barrel longevity, so my question is: will it eat wolf ammo right off the bat no problem? or will i have to "break it in" with some cleaner better quality ammo?

You should break it in with better stuff. Remember Wolf is dirty and it IS corrosive, don't believe what people say, it's corrosive I have seen what has happened to an AK that was left uncleaned for months, it corroded very badly, even my AK's gas port had some surface rust after a few weeks. That is 7.62x39, I don't know about 5.56. Don't let that discourage you from using Wolf since it's not bad for target shooting and it's cheap just make sure you clean accordingly.

Wolf is not corrosive. Ive ran close to a thousand rounds of wolf through my AR and plan to keep buying it. For what i do (100 range max) its perfect for my AR and I plan to buy a bunch for my AK.

How sure are you that the rust you saw in that AK was from the wolf? It was left uncleaned for months, I think its a stretch at best to say the ammo could have caused it. The humidity in the air itself can do that if you dont clean your weapons.

That being said, I wouldn't see anything wrong with "breaking in" with wolf if you plan to use it in the future. Might as well start off with it. I started my AR with some SA milsurp but thats just because the closest range to me does not allow steel core bullets.

If you like to replace extractors all the time .... use that steel ammo in your AR.

Whats an extractor cost these days, ten bucks and a five minute job? Well worth the savings on ammo by the time you need to change the extractor.

Not a dollar point I was trying to make. More of a reliability

Lets assume best case - That really did happen after four months of the gun sitting untouched. Would this be a problem for you? I know I'm no where near as experienced as some of you on this board but if you clean your gun after using it this should not be a concern for you.

I'm just saying be careful and know that it's corrosive. If you clean your gun you will have no problem. I clean my AK so I don't worry about it. When I get my AR built I will use Wolf in it. Dstorm1911 is a very reliable source so I tend to believe him, he's an expert on AK's.

There's nothing wrong with Wolf. There's really nothing right about it, either, other than the price.

You can get decent brass cased remanufactured stuff for the same price.

That being said, I've used quite a bit of it, without issues. Your LMT should definitely be able to handle it. Just clean it out after each trip. There are some known issues with jamming if you shoot some Wolf then switch to brass (the non-expanding steel allows fouling to get around the case and in the chamber, brass expands and sticks to the fouling).

How many 10's of thousands of rounds does it take to wear an extractor? That's just silly. The steel of an extractor is much, much stronger/harder than any steel cased ammunition.

How many extractors have you broken using wolf personally?
I have fired over 3000 rounds of wolf in the past 2 years alone and have not broken an extractor or noticed any abnormal wear.

Some rifes will shoot wolf with no problems while others won't. You can't tell until you try it. All my ARs are mix masters built out of parts from several companies and they all eat wolf. I am also pretty lax on cleaning them (which means almost never) and while they are pretty dirty they still run fine no matter what ammo I use.

You must have an extractor made of krypton. I've had and scene them break or at least wear the corner down after 1000rds or less on steel casings. Just personal experience and preference. Don't get me wrong .... I don't hate wolf. Just bought 4k rounds of 7.62x39 for my Kalashnikov's .... If your considering price for .223 ... 5 for wolf and 6 for Rem UMC brass ... its a no brainer for me.

I'm not a big wolf fan but there's a kid from Bakersfield that won his class at the iron man and he shoots wolf.

I've seen him hit 350 yard 10" targets almost as fast as the best shooters there is shooting the hi price spread.

If he keeps shooting he could be one of those shooters.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

The wolf ammo I have in 7.62x39 says it's non-corrosive. It's the cammo boxes.

while i do admit wolf is some dirty stuff... im not so sure if it is corrosive
for the price, if your rifle shoots it fine... enjoy!!!
