    Power of the .270 Win?

I just picked up a vintage (1974) Winchester Mod. 70 in 270 Win. It was more of an impulse buy, it was a smokin' deal... My main thought was to get it for pig hunting and deer. But I wanted to know, what is the upper limit of the 270 as far as game?

Could I take a large cat, such as a mountain lion, though I'd hate to ever shoot such a beautiful animal. I've hear some say you can take an elk as well (with range and shot placement as key variables...)

    Who has any thoughts...

Great rifle and very capable for big game. For a good discussion about the 270 check here: http://www.chuckhawks.com/270family.htm

270 is a classic hard hitting round capable of taking any large game you can find in the USA. A mountain Lion is actually just as squishy and soft as humans. Have heard of many people taking them with 22lr rifles.

270 has a long history of being a successful game round, you will do just fine with it. I just prefer 308 because its alot cheaper.

Google Jack O'Connor and his thoughts on the .270 Winchester. When I reach into the safe for hunting season the .270 finds it way into my hand from Alabama to California game.

You will not be disappointed. It's possibly the number 2 most selling hunting round in America behind the 30-06. It shoots flat, flies fast and hits hard. I like it and hunt with it. I use 140grain Hornady InterLock SPBT reloaded by me flying at about 3100fps.

One of the true classic American hunting cartridges vociferously promoted by Jack O Conner which did a lot to make it popular. It is a necked down .30-06 round with some minor changes at the shoulder.

I personally think it is a bit light for Elk, or anything larger, but a well placed shot would do the job as said by others. It is the caliber that I used to hunt deer for about fifteen years or so after I retired a .30-06 that my Dad gave me.

Elk here, heavy bullets, no problem. Once per year. One-shot stops 9 years in a row.

Great flat shooting cartridge... Mine won't be going on an elk hunt but it is definitely my go to rifle for deer and smaller game..
