A BB locks the magazine in the firearm so you need to eject the magazine out by using a tool, not your finger. This makes your rifle CA compliant and has a Fixed magazine. Once you have a fixed magazine you can have a pistol grip + other things.

When you build a rifle you must choose one of two paths. (you can swap back and forth, but it must be one way or the other way, never mixing)

    1) Fixed magazine with 10 max capacity
    2) No evil features and you get to detach your magazine with the press of a button using your finger. This also allows the use of high capacity magazines that you owned or LEGALLY acquired. (Pistol grip, Forward Grip, Flare Launcher, Telescoping Stock, Thumbhole Stock, Flash Hider, these are the evil features detachable magazine rifles can NOT have.)

With a Fixed magazine you can have all the evil features, building a rifle WITHOUT ANY EVIL FEATURES allows you to have a detachable magazine...one that is removed with a push of a button.

Thanks guys. I'm learning a lot here. I was under the mistaken impression that a removable magazine was a no-no under any circumstances. Thanks for clarifying that along with the bullet-button issue.

I'm working under the premise that the evil features are more than half the fun, so no detachable mag for me

So, bullet button vs. top load.... What's the most popular choice? Even with a BB, it seems to me that you still have the option to top load and the BB can't be that expensive. Right?

Wow, top-load, haven't heard that in a while. A Bullet Button is like 30 bucks max.

If you travel out of state with it, consider getting a convertible type bullet button. A few twists of a screw and your dropping 30-rounders out in a heartbeat. That is my plan when I get up to building one soon.

Youtube, CheaperthanDirt videos are great. Literally 8, 1-2 minute videos. That's all I practically used. And help from Calgunners as well

Only thing I think I could add would be, for a lot of great ideas on how different you could assemble an AR with a variety of options, is check out this forums Rifle Gallery section. Starting with the AR thread maybe...

Plus like the others said, the main part of making it CA legal is the bullet button and a 10 round magazine

And the crazy thing is, that no two are exactly the same.

I recently picked up the AR build video made by JD Machine at the gun show in Costa Mesa. It's $10 and 3 hours long. It touches on the CA legal aspects but it's really about building your AR from scratch. I watched it and have been passing it around to my buddies. It's a great video and a good place to start if it's your first build.
