    Precision rifle barrel question

I'm new to the precision rifle gig, and this is only my second match grade barrel. So go easy on me if this is one of those epic noob questions, m'kay?

Just received my Black Hole Weaponry SS 3 Poly AR308 barrel today. YAY! Take it out, everything looks good, finish is beautiful, there's a little crap (I think from packing) in the gas port, but I blow on it and it all comes out.

Then I notice the crown has some little tooling marks. Uh....haven't I heard that the crown is ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS EVER IF IT'S BARELY NICKED YOU'LL LOSE ALL ACCURACY etc etc etc?

So here's the pics. Like I said, it's tooling marks. There are some curved light scratches that look like they came from machinery, and there's two slightly rough spots. It's minor, it really is. There's no 1/8" gashes or anything, and the marks don't touch the bore. I just want to make sure before I continue to build this rifle that this is fine, won't screw my accuracy, and I shouldn't be calling BHW in the morning. Thanks!

This one's blurry, but oddly enough easier to see.

Any suggestions on how to coax a better picture of a highly reflective surface using a camera phone? :P

If the marks don't touch the bore why do you think it would affect accuracy?

*points to the part where he's a noob*

So that's my whole point. I don't think it'll be a problem, *but I wanted to be sure before I shot it*. People talk about how MASSIVELY IMPORTANT a FLAWLESS MUZZLE is, just wanted to make sure. :P

I don't know if I would consider that a "precision" barrel, but if the scratches aren't in the area where the rifling transitions to the muzzle you should be okay. Shoot it and let us know!

Scratches on the surface aren't a problem, it's the lip of the muzzle where the bullet is initially free of the rifling that is the problem. If you have any burs or deformations there you'll have accuracy problems. That's why a crown is cut recessed (usually 11 degrees from the muzzle plane): to protect the lip of the muzzle.

I was recommended BHW over Rainier match and other options. I didn't have the money or time for a Krieger.

It's bore, bevel, then crown. The bore transitions to the bevel that's the most important part to look at, and what you are seeing with the tooling marks is the crown.

Thanks guys! Like I said, noob.

JP Tactical Comp (large frame) arrives Monday. Kies adjustable gas block comes Friday, Larue/Harris QD bipod comes tomorrow.

Picking up the Geiselle SSA-E and PRS for it on the 15th, then all that's left is trying to find a Vortex Viper PST 6-24 FFP MRAD and snag a Bobro mount.

Just shoot it. If your accuracy is affected, there's your answer.

Looks fine but if you're really concerned, take it to a smith and have it recrowned before you mount it all up.
