    Best AR Cleaning Instructional Video?

    Hey guys,

Anxiously awaiting my first AR. I've read that it's a good idea to clean it and lube it before shooting it. Thing is, I'm new to the platform. I've been scouring YouTube for instructional vids, and although there's many of them, they all do it differently, so I'm guessing it comes down to personal preference more than anything. But mainly, I'm looking for the basics.

So, can you guys point me in the right direction?

I've heard that this one is the best... do you agree?

I'm also very confused with everything I've read about all the different lubes and solvents. Some people swear by certain products, other people swear by others. Someone help me navigate this vast sea of information!

I wish I had a YouTube video of it, but the MAGPUL carbine 1 DVD has a pretty good break down of the whole process including taking apart your BCG.

I like this one too. Although it needs to be updated for Piston-AR owners...

Those patch eyelets suck. Should be replaced with a jag. He should also be using a rod guide.

It also looks like he used the chamber brush wrong...it's not meant to push in and out like that. It should be turned as it is inserted, and then rotated a few times once it bottoms out. It doesn't look like he had a solid handle on the rod he was using, so he pushed it in and out a bit instead.

I doubt the bolt needs to soak like that, I just wipe it down with hoppes, dry it, and put it back together...

I'm getting the Colt 6920, and I've read not to use Hoppes' on it because it has a a chrome-lined barrel, and Hoppes will corrode it. Is that true?

There's so much misinformation out there!

ZT, thanks for that review. Very informative! Does the video cover cleaning in depth, and go over essential tools, what products work the best, etc?

Since I'm getting a Colt myself, if the answer to those questions are yes, then this is probably the video for me.

Good starting point and you can fine tune your process.

Hoppes won't damage your hard chromed barrel. Some people are confused between the different types of chrome, which leads to bad advice.

Does Caputo's video go over specific cleaning procedures/supplies?

I like the one that comes in the OTIS cleaning kit.

There are not really many specific brand recommendations, if that's what you are looking for. But let's face it, that's really a lot of personal opinion more than anything else.

What is covered in pretty decent detail is what is really necessary vs. what is not, as regards problem areas, points of potential failure ... and where a lot of people do unnecessary things which can do more harm than good.

Frankly, I think it should be included with every new AR15 purchase ... it's that good.
