because of gas and ammo prices on the rise, im now interested in a .22lr. what are some good .22lr bolt action rifles to keep an eye on? i just want a decent accurate rifle mainly for plinking. it seems like the 10/22 is a great model, but i grew up on a bolt action. well, thanks in advance...

I'm probably going to be adding a Marlin 981T to the stable sometime in the future.Comment

Keep watching for used .22 rifles. I've found some real deals on tack drivers. A couple of years ago, I found a Rem 513J for $67.00! Just before that, I picked up a US PROPERTY marked Mossberg M44 for $125. I also still have a Mossberg M42 that I paid $75 for. It shoots 10 shot ragged holes at 40 meters (off the bench). Of course, if money is no object, get a new Anschutz (I like mine) or the like.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

Just added a Sav MkII to my safe for cross training use. Reports are that they are tack drivers with the right ammo and IMHO the thumbhole stock feels similar to my AICS.I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.
As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.Comment

The funny thing is all of the rimfire Benchrest shooters have been made aware by reliable sources (authorized local distributors) that there will be a 20% (give or take a few %) increase in rimfire ammo at or around the 1st of the the new year. This includes the popular Wolf ammo (Match Target and Match Extra) and SK. Lapua and Eley weren't mentioned to me, but I'm pretty sure those will most likely go up, too.
My opinion for an excellent all around tack driver is a 10/22 with a Volquartsen 16" THM tension barrel, a Hogue Overmold bull barrel stock, and a Volquartsen hammer. This is fairly inexpensive, and it will give you a gun that can shoot even the cheap stuff.
Here's an old picture of a test target I shot back when I sold my Volquartsen THM barrel:
The fact that it can shoot the Federal 'classic' grey box stuff shows that the THM is a good barrel for accurate plinking.
But if you are adamant about a bolt gun, the CZ 452/453 is a good gun. A few of my shooting buddies have them with the heavy varmint barrels, and they're ok out of the box, but not as great as people on the Internet claim to be. You hear stories of CZ 452/453s shooting better than .5 MOA out of the box, but the guys I know definitely never got that kind of performance. It's just a matter of some guy shooting a bunch of targets and finally shooting one that groups a quarter inch and calls his gun sub-moa. Anyway, I've handled the 452/453 and it's a nice rifle. The single set trigger on the 453 is pretty nifty. Excellent break and no creep.
A friend of mine has a Savage 22 (I am unsure of the model), that he threw into a Sharp Shooter Supply stock and is extremely happy with it. He shoots it in the local benchrest rimfire match and it does a decent job. It doesn't compare to the custom action rifles, but posts respectable scores for a rifle that costs way under $1000.Last edited by ocabj; 11-29-2007, 9:14 AM.

I have a Marlin bolt gun that was less than 200 and is a tack driver even with a cheap 4x Bushnell. I did go a Rifle Basix trigger set and added a bipod. Not as pretty as a CZ or other high end model but, I dont worry when in the field or the when the kids shoot it.
Not too bad in my book.Last edited by RobG; 11-29-2007, 9:17 AM.Comment

not to throw this off topic...
I love the thought of a small caliber bolt gun. i'm trying to get some info and opinions on a 22lr or 17hmr bolt gun. ( i heard the 17hmr is a bit more expensive but has better ballistics?)
any opinions on the two calibers...pro's/con's?
brands?Comment

I've got a remmington targetmaster that I absolutly love... single shot, bolt action, with interchangable olympic style peep sights and a 30 inch barrel.
gotta love the classicsComment

From 10-100 yards the 22lr does fine and the ammo is so much cheaper that it gets shot a lot. The 17Hmr will add another 75 -100 yards of effective range but at about 8 times the cost for ammo.
At anything past 100 yards I like to watch the varmints blow up so I use the centerfires.Frank

My buddy and I both have CZ 452's, and they truly are amazingly accurate bolt action .22's. My buddy's Lux cost around four bills, my Trainer cost about two and a half. Fantastic rifles for the money.
If you're not hell bent on bolts, may I suggest a lever action? Marlin 39's are WAAAAAY fun at the range. They might cost a bit (a new 39a will run close to five bills, sometimes more), but when you hold one, you'll appreciate the fine craftsmanship and materials.Last edited by BamBam-31; 11-29-2007, 2:15 PM.sigpicComment
