as far as quality...im wanting to buy a AR and have come down to these two unless anyone has a better way to go

If price isn't an obstacle make sure to get the regular S&W M&P and not the "sport" version.

I'd personally go with a BCM.

I have the S&W M&P 15. Got it in April of 2010. A bit pricey, but excellent quality, nice finish, shoots very well. I am very happy. Don't know much about the sport version.

Two different platforms. Ones DI the other piston. Just curious as to why the two different platforms?

i knew the platform question would come up,actually i was looking at the mfg's and quality
of weapon,but the more i read about carrier tilt with the piston system i forgetting the ruger and looking between S&W and stag poss the model 3,,

The S&W is far better than a BCM for the average shooter. BCMs are just built on mil-spec which is the Militarys inspection point. To get better than that you want a civilian rifle...ie S&W. Nothing wrong with BCM...its just not what a civilian should care about. LEO like to think they are going to be fighting hordes of taliban along side SEALs, so they want BCM...once again for the job they are doing 99% of the time they too would be better served buying S&W.

Once again, NOTHING WRONG WITH BCM... Its just NOT the best choice for a civilian shooter with civilian needs, with civilian choices buying gear in the civilian market place.

S&W uses Ferritic Nitrocarburizing and QPQ manufacturing. The gas port is larger than the military to allow the shooter a larger selection of ammo.

I would take a S&W over a Ruger. S&W represents a good entry level AR IMHO.

I have a S&W M&P15 Sport, which also has the larger gas port. It happily eats up any and all ammo I throw at it. I really like not having to be picky about ammo.

I don't think I have any ARs that are picky about ammo. But the 1-9 twist on most of the civilian guns is nice if you want to be able to shoot bullets weighind less than 55 grains. Of the choices you posted, the S&W is still the best value. Ruger and Stag both make fine guns. But between the price point, the features, and the lifetime warranty, the S&W wins hands down. And no, I don't own one. I have played with them, and I have compared parts and features. But I still have not gotten around to buying one.

Try getting a PSA rifle kit, and buying a stripped lower from your local gun store. Any standard forged lower will do, from $50 - $100. When its on sale you can get a PSA lower for $50, $80 regular price. Lots of local places have $80 Aero precision lowers, and $100 spikes lowers, Riflegear $100. etc etc. Shop around!

Its fun and easy, and you got just about everyone on Calguns to help you with your build.
