    Muzzel Break Issue, please advise.

I purchased a Stag Arms upper and when I went to test it out at the range tonight, several people came to me and stated that the muzzel break was facing downward and it should be facing upward. I tried to screw it off and reinstall in every which direction and it always ended up facing downward.

Anyone ever come across this, and if so how did you resolve it? It does have a crush washer btw.

    TIA for any advice.

I believe the muzzle brake should vent upwards. It's purpose is to slow the barrel climb. Thicker washer needed?

This is what I was thinking, I was told at the range that a gunsmith rethreading of the barrel might be needed, but I really hope not.

How tight are you torquing it? Can you still move it when you apply more torque? Crush washers should be able to allow you to keep turning it until it faces the right orientation unless the washer is already flattened out.

I have a feeling that yours is already bottomed out and you need a new one and start over and stop once its facing up and tight without over doing it.

Can you still tighten it another 180 degrees or is it not moving?

It's definitely installed upside down. In my opinion, it sounds like you have a crush washer that was crushed too far. Sorry, there is no saving it. Fortunately, it can be replaced for just a couple bucks, plus S&H. Here is one on midway: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/333...h-washer-ar-15

To install you usually have the cupped end of the washer facing out toward the muzzle. Then screw on your muzzle device until it makes contact with the washer. Then you wrench on the brake just enough for it to "crush" the washer some, but stop once it is indexed correctly. Don't keep twisting it on til it stops turning, that's not how they work.

isnt that considered a flash hider? And yes its upside down. Don't torque it all the way down. The crush washer should help keep it snug.

Here is a pic of both sides of the washer, there really is no play after its facing down

Sorry for my noobness, I thought it was a muzzle break.

FYI you can torque the absolute hell out of those (looks like a standard a2 birdcage to me, not a muzzle brake)
you don't rise to the occasion,
you just fall back on your level of training.

the crush washer is probably fully compressed...it needs to be replaced. the are $2 from midway. Im sure local shops will carry them in your area as well. Just crank it down one good time around to "crush" the washer when installing it.

Looks like it's time to ditch that 7 dollar flash hider and time to upgrade

I just torqued the crap out of it and smashed that crush washer down and got a half turn on it which looks like problem is solved. I really didnt want to put so much elbow grease into it since I was afraid to cause some damage, but I figured, hell im gonna get a new washer anyway, lets crush it. And it worked!
