Care to share details about this one??
Several years ago DOJ crew supplanted by BNE (narcs) - busted a buncha folks for perfectly legal items. The key offending item was an HK 9X pistol grip frame and surplus LAW tubes which are just 'cool pipes" and legal. The HK grip frame is a non-receiver and uncontrolled. Other firearms at the show were popped that were perfectly legal at the time

Charges were dropped quietly and the LA DA was left hanging on the hook.

The statement about LA DA office comes straight from a noted gun lawyer not in LA.

The dressed-up charges are still on the DOJ website http://ag.ca.gov/newsalerts/release....r=1999&month=6

One or two plain violations (illegal unpapered sales) may have occurred but the DOJ was all wet on AW stuff.

        M. Sage is totally right about the DOJ and the opportunities to arrest us. I've been at the range with my OLLs when Iggy's been there (he goes to Chabot on a regular basis). Heck, I was even competing in a tactical rifle match one day when he was there and I pulled off a 30 round mag dump (on the tactical rifle range) with my LEGAL AK off-list rifle. He didn't even come up to the match range to see what was going on.

Go to practically any public range in California, and you are going to see OLLs galore!

This is not legal advice, but OLLs are perfectly legal under the letter of the law, and like Bill says, there's never been a conviction for a legal OLL.

Has anyone had an LEO come up to you and said that weapon is illegal? What happened after you told him/showed him the laws that its completely legal?

I've NEVER had an LEO come up to me or my friends with OLLs to ask if they were legal or not, EVER.

Any idea how much it costs to have the charges dropped?

I've had people come up to me (I don't know if they were LEOs or not) and say something like "I thought those were banned," or "how did you get that?"

I just tell them that it's perfectly legal, and I explain to them the laws about OLLs.

Usually I get people asking about my AKs - not so much my FAL or AR. I think gun owners are starting to realize that AR "type" rifles are perfectly legal in California *if* they are off-list and configured correctly. A lot of gun owners don't seem to know that AK-type rifles, if "off-list," are also perfectly legal if configured correctly.

That's because the good guys carry AR type rifles and only evil* people have AK type rifles........
I think a lot of what we do and how we respond in a situation like that dictates not only our distant future as gun owners but also the immediate consequences.
If some of them are in fact undercover cops or just off duty your polite concise and articulate answers either convince them you are in the right as is the case or makes them doubt they can get you to self incriminate and give them an easy bust.
For the rest if they get a reasonable explanation from someone who does not appear to be a psycho it can only help unless you are dealing with Diane Boxersteinpelosi.

Half of the guys on the rifle side was shooting OLLs when I went to Angeles over the Thanksgiving holiday. They have become very common there.

But you can set up a trust instead, that way you don't need a CLEO signoff.

It's getting to the point where I rarely get that even. I jumped into the off-list thing kind of late (funds were an issue), though.
