Anyone have problems with running Russian steel ammo in their AR?

I know, do a search and I have. For the sake of good conversation here goes.

I just got a case of Wolf 55 grain .223 for plinking for my AR.

I know the steel stuff is harder than brass but has anyone had any problems running it? Since I keep extra extractors on hand are there any other prats that might have a problem running it?

From some reading it is under powered. Is this going to lower my POA at 50 yards if I have a 50 yard zero?

How about accuracy. These days I am shooting offhand at 50 yards and can keep most of them in a 5" target. I am guessing that 2" groups at this range are about average. The barrel in question is 16" chrome lined 1/7.

    Thanks all, Sammy

Nope. I've run steel in my old .223 upper and only run steel in my current 7.62x39 upper. Haven't had a problem yet.

It works fine in my Delton upper in 5.56mm. The chamber is chrome lined which may be the answer to steel case problems. We haven't had a thread about Deltons for awhile, shall we start up again?

Not me. If you have a quality made AR it should eat any ammo.

Only time I've ran into problems is when my dad shoots it in his m16 (registered class III out here in az) sometimes you run into a round that is underpowered and it will cause a jam durring full auto. So he only shoots factory new brass cased ammo durring FA

Other then that, in semi auto I've never had an issue, minus 1 dud within 2k rounds in my low cost stag 2ht. Might as well shoot cheap ammo if it's just for plinking.

stuff is pretty underpowered and will cause problems at higher rates of fire

keep in mind that steel is not as flexible as brass. this leads to the case not springing back after expansion in the chamber - and makes it difficult for ARs with anything but a carbine length gas system to cycle reliably.

Yep. Wolf polymer coated. A stuck case in my Spikes build. Actually the extractor ripped a chunk of of the rim off. Never happened in my Stag though, and never with brass.

I also had a Hornady steel case "training" catridge I almost chambered that had fissure in the shoulder & neck.

Both in the same day. Sold all my steel case stuff and will stick to brass. I don't get out to the range as much as I used too, and when I do I don't want to mar the day with these kinds of things.

Edit: should clarify, I used a Spikes upper and lower and parts for both, but the barrel was a Brownells 1 in 8 twist.

Was the Spikes chrome lined? Do you think it would have made a difference if it was or not?

Not any in my safe now. However had a CMMG upper that just plain refused to run steel cased ammo.

Technically no ar should have problems shooting steel cased ammo. In my opionion.

I corrected my post. The barrel itself wasn't Spikes, so I can't say anything about their chambers.

But I think my barrel is chrome lined. I'd have to double check to be sure though.

To potencially avoid issues running steel cased ammo, do not shoot a mixture of steel and brass without completely cleaning the chamber.

I'd like to agree with that, "technically". But practically, it seems some do, some don't.

I'm wouldn't be surprised if its due to differences in tolerances and quality control, both in the parts and the builder.

Stuck cases, chamber tolerances and diferences in loads, aside, the steel cases will be harder on the extractor.

But if you shoot enough, it probably still cost effective to replace an extratcor or two, or deal with stuck cases. But it's not what I want for SD or SHTF. Save the brass stuff for that.

My Stag upper eats it up and spits it out. Never a problem and I go from steel to factory brass to reloads without any issues
