Has anyone built a "retro" OLL AR-15

So my buddys and I were sitting around talking about our next builds, and I suggested a Vietnam era M-16 style . If you have built one, where did you get your parts? No I don't want a full auto or any of that nonsense, just an "old school" looking hoppin out of a "Huey" into a rice paddy AR.
    Thanks,

Parts from NODAK SPUD Retro , lower and upper. Sherluk marketing and trading should have everything else. Slick bolt carrier and prong FH from Fulton and the car stock from Essential Arms. Barrel your choice

    Edited later

You can mod a "new" lower if you already have one. Takes some work and some skill to do but it can be done . Go to AR15.com they have a section on retro building

I've been scavanging early colt parts for a long time now. (Mostly I bought this stuff on accident when I first started getting into AR building)

a pencil barrel that I picked up for 60$ shipped on Arfcom (I didn't know what it was at the time)

early M16 pre A1 military upper with the small front hole, that cost 100$

an early delta ring assembly that I picked up for free (thrown in on some other parts I bought)

a slickside colt M16 bolt carrier, a transitional model that has a chromed gas key but a parkerized carrier finish, it cost $75 from a guy on THR, I bought it thinking it was an A2 carrier, but was surprised when It showed up.

I paid $45 for an early colt bolt on Arfcom.

I picked up an early colt three prong flash hider in a parts lot off of gunbroker.

and a complete early furniture set (with the molted shiney finish)for $25 from another guy on THR

currently I'm missing a FSB and a handguard endcap.

I plan on using one of the nodak spud retro lowers to put it all togeather.

I built one and love it.... I got pretty much everything from www.gunbroker.com all Colt, except parts kit (Stag) and lower (Superior Arms) and the good ole' bullet botton.... I will be switching out my lower to a retro Nodak spud very soon....

That sounds just like what I was thinking. What is the differance between the newer lower and a Nodak Spud? Is it safe to assume it's "off list" I am really just concerned about the "look" the internals can all be modern
            Thanks Again All,

Yeah... the outsides are just retro cut...the inside is modern... I would love to re-do my metal like original Colt grey/black... any ideas...?

For Colt grey refinishing, guys on the Retro forum at ARFCOM recommend: http://www.johnnorrellarms.com/.

Bought my Colt A1 upper assembly from CDNN (plus BCG from RRA) and put it on my Superior Arms lower (RRA LPK). A1 buttstock and pistol grip came from Moore's Militaria, black nylon sling from a gun show. My favorite AR to shoot, it handles so well.

I have triangular hand-guards on my dissipator. Does that count?

Here was a build I did last year..I don't have it anymore but it will give you some visuals of what to get. It was on a registered rec.

It was so light my young sons are able to stand with it, aim and shoot with minimal physical assistance.

luck of the draw on used pencil barrels, some get pulled off of brand new uppers because people want heavy profile stuff, others get burned out by FA fire from the guys back east...

buy a bunch of them, and use the so-so ones for .22 conversions.
