New Cali resident, new member, some ?'s

Hi all. I'm new to California and the board. Spent an enlistment in the Corp so I've spent a little time with an M16. Last weekend at the OC gun show I bought a stripped Stag lower. Now I'm killing myself searching for info on uppers. I'm leaning towards the CMMG 18" stainless upper with the rifle length gas system. But, I'm new to putting together an AR and thought I'd see what you all think.

I'd also like to ask what the rules are for attaching a upper to an OLL? Specifically in regards to flash suppressors and compensators?

    First of all.
    Semper Fi.
Second, I'm sorry...Arizona would have been a better choice.
Third this website has buckets of great info on what you are looking for.
So much it can be a bit daunting.
There are ins and outs to building the rifle you want but it is possible but it will be a bit different from what you used in the Corp.
It's all here, you just gotts to find it but it isn't hard.
I'm an AK man myself so I don't know much about the AR but I think if you really want a flash hider as opposed to a brake you either need to install something like a bullet button or a monsterman grip to avoid trouble.
Personally I'm just doing the brake and no grip route.
I figure if the feces hits the oscillation I can always hang a Pgrip after Law and Order are over and done.
It's all here and you will get all the answers you need.

Bucc, the irony is that I just came from Arizona. Got drug out here by my wife, and it will be a while before she hears the end of it. On the bright side, the weather ain't near as hot as in AZ and the beach is only 10 min. away.

Anyway. I've been searching this board for a while, hoping I could find most of the answers myself. But I don't think I've managed the right key search words.

Man I went off topic. If I were you I'd try the gripless setup first to see if it's livable.

              Hi Muntz!

              Welcome!

I'll give you the broad overview - just remember, this isn't legal advice. . .

There's two ways to configure an "off-list" rifle in California:

              1) The first way is with a fixed magazine.

If you have a fixed magazine, you can have all the evil features you want. In California, evil features are:
              a. flash hider
              b. forward pistol grip
              c. pistol grip / thumb hole stock
              d. collapsible stock

Note that if you fixed your magazine - you can only use a 10 round magazine. This shouldn't be an issue, since it is not likely that you had any hi-cap magazines in California before the ban.

There's a couple of ways to fix the magazine - one way is with something like the "Prince 50" mag lock that locks the mag in place. Another way is to use what is called a "bullet button." The bullet button makes your magazine "fixed" under the law, since it still requires a tool to remove (a bullet or other small pointy object).

If you want to have detachable magazines - then you have option #2:

              2) You can build a featureless rifle:

Featureless rifles have NO evil features - they don't have a flash hider (they have either nothing on the barrel or a muzzle brake). They don't have a forward pistol grip. They don't have a pistol grip / thumb hole stock. And they don't have a collapsible stock.

Usually people configure these rifles with what is called the Monster Man Grip (MMG) - this is a NON-pistol grip that is not a PG under the legal definition.

The one nice thing about featureless rifles is that you can use detachable magazines, and if you legally own hi-caps, you can use those too.

              Hope this helps!!!

                Thanks. Great info.

Now if I can open a can of worms and ask about brands of uppers and where I can find out the pro's and con's. DPMS, LMT, RRA, Stag, CMMG? I understand about the twist rates, chrome vs. non-chromed, barrel length, etc. Need to know what makes one cost more than another, the companys' reputations, and potential accuracy?

                Thanks again.

Muntz, what area in Kali do you live in? If you are in the LA area, you can go visit our local AR toy store (better known as Randall's garage) after visiting his website http://www.ar15barrels.com/

He's a member of this site, so you can PM him. Chances are, he'll hit this thread sooner or later.

I would also suggest a bullet button build as it is very unlikely that you had 30 round mags in Kali before 2001. Beside, a BB'd lower will give you the look and feel of the M16 that you are used to, except for having to use a pointy tool to remove short mags. Welcome to occupied territory!

Hoorah, Muntz. Hey, if you haven't already done so, check out gunbroker.com. It's an ebay-style auction web site for weapons afficionados. I picked up a DPMS 16" M4 upper complete with charging handle and bolt for under $400 that I attached to my stag-15 lower. You do have to do your reasearch for prices but some dealers offer great deals. Reputation is based on feedback, and you get all your non-serial #'ed parts sent to your front door! Good Luck with your future builds.
