Will installing a CMMG .22 conversion bolt in my AR-15 (with features) negate the need for a bullet button? Or is this a gray area since the upper is not a dedicated .22 upper?

CMMG conversion and bullet button

Unfortunately, no. I don't have any normal capacity .22 magazines to go along with it. I'll have to stick with some new 10 rounders.sigpicNRA Endowment Member

Made it a little clearer. You were correct, but didn't say enough.Ya, Hopefully you have some 10+ mags too that are preban. If you switch your upper back to any center fire without removing all "evil features" (making the rifle "featureless") or installing a magazine lock before installing a centerfire upper you can be an instant felonLast edited by Grumpyoldretiredcop; 01-14-2012, 4:19 PM.I'm retired. I'm not aware of any 10+ capacity preban AR22 mags... but my buddy's son has a bunch for his 10/22 that were given to him on his birthday in 1999.- Rich

mags
There are some out there.Colt had a conversion for sale back in the early 80"s.They look identical to the CMMG kit with the light grey mags. Also Ceiner are the same mags except they dont not have a plastic cover on them to look like thirty round mags.Comment

It is a gray area if the lower is marked .223/5.56 and a conversion bolt is installed. While I do not believe even a new DA would push this into a courtroom, and I don't believe an LEO would arrest for it, ....if there were other curcumstances...such as a pound of weed or a kilo of Cocaine...a DUI arrest... yes they would add on an AW charge.
For a normal "inspection" you may get a crossed eyed lecture about it from the LEO, but they wouldn't waste their time on an arrest. Thats just my opinion, not legal counsel.Last edited by dieselpower; 01-15-2012, 9:55 AM.Comment

Thanks for the additional info diesel, I figured as much. The lower on the AR in question is stamped Multi Cal so I should be able to fly under the radar.sigpicNRA Endowment Member

A dedicated CMMG upper? I wouldn't (and don't) have any issues with a "factory" lower, even if marked 5.56 (mine is marked "Multi" as are most now).
But a CMMG conversion bolt? That starts getting into the gray-ish territory that Bill has talked about a "broken AW is still an AW"... he's referring to the removal of the bolt, or removal of the gas tube... while true they both render the rifle not "semiautomatic", their removal doesn't change the state of what the rifle is.
Now, removing a bolt and installing a conversion bolt?
Ya, by the letter of the law it's a rimfire, but I would not be comfortable going further than a BB tool or mag-magnet.
Like those who feel that it is wise to transport a BB-equipped rifle with an empty 10rd mag installed, I would not feel comfortable transporting or storing a conversion bolt rifle without a BB.
Yes... it IS legal and certainly defensible.... do you have the time and money to deal with defending it?
Even if CGF agrees that there is no color to the case and agreed to defend you, you're still looking at a lot of lost time from work, and the stigma of being charged with a felony.... and if your bail is $20,000, your family is out $2,000, non refundable, to the bondsman.- Rich

Speaking from the peace officer's point of view, I can say with confidence that most peace officers would look at the chamber (if they went that far), see that the rifle is chambered for .22LR, and that would be the end of the matter. AR conversions of all sorts are common enough that what the receiver says doesn't matter. The only precaution that I might take is not to have the 5.56 bolt assembly near or in the same container with the rifle when it's in .22LR configuration, but that's just caution, not supported by case or statute law.It is a gray area if the lower is marked .223/5.56 and a conversion bolt is installed. While I do not believe even a new DA would push this into a courtroom, and I don't believe an LEO would arrest for it, ....if there were other curcumstances...such as a pound of weed or a kilo of Cocaine...a DUI arrest... yes they would add on an AW charge.
