    Difference in bolt coatings

I was amazed today when I purchased a standard Spikes Tactical AR15 Complete Bolt Carrier Group on how rough it seems to be.

I currently have a spikes chrome complete bolt carrier group and a JP Stainless Low Mass Carrier with new QPQ black hard coat treatment. These two bolt group are smooth as butter in the uppers and just moving it all together. Snap shot judgement for me would be to pay the extra for the chrome or hardened coat treatment next time around.

I will run my new spikes standard bolt very wet to break in and I guess hand break it in a couple hundred times before taking it out. We will see how she feels after a true run.

I am assuming this is noticed by others as well.

Good question. I was thinking of starting a thread addressing this question. Is chrome worth it? Thanks. I look forward to replies.

Ive seen many people say great things about Chrome. If you dont have it, its all good, but once you have it, they all like it. Its just up to you if you want to fork over that extra cash for it.

Performance wise, they are all same, but much easier to clean. BTW, most chrome bcg's are not Milspec. But the way we are allowed to shoot here in CALI, im not sure if Milspec bolt is really necessary haha.

FailZero is a company who does coatings on their BCGs. Some companies even have them do their factory bolts, including LWRCi.

Do your research on their stuff.
