    Locked longguns near school clarification

Long guns need to be locked in addition to being unloaded when transported near or in the range of 1000 feet of a school. Does it matter which schools or all public schools?

I live near from an adult school that's for learning trade stuff, night classes etc. It's not a high school or elementary. Lock required?

EDIT: Actually i'm not sure if its an official city district school. It says "City Name" Adult Center.

This is exactly the reason why I lock ALL my guns when transporting. I don't wanna put up with BS over a technicality.

Does rendering the long arm inoperable by removing the bolt or trigger group meet the need of this law?

First, it is only the Federal GFSZ act that requires that long guns be locked. The state law does not require that.

Second, removing the bolt, or using a cable lock, does NOT meet the requirements of the federal law. The long gun needs to be in a locked case (trunk ok) or locked rack.

I highly doubt it. Our laws don't usually make distinctions for things that makes sense.

When I go to the range I always lock up my guns its just not worth the risk that you will go thru 1000 feet from a school zone and not even know it. (Not that you should be doing anything to get pulled over when transporting firearms)

Plus to leave my neighborhood I have to go thru a school zone as there is one on each end of the main street.

I am surrounded by schools no matter which route I take from home. I always have the handguns in a locked container but the long guns are in soft cases. My jeep doesn't have a trunk. I will have to do something to comply.

If you can manage to padlock the zipper of the soft cases you are good.

Just lock it up, do you really want to be pulled over with a long gun in your car that's unlock by in a school zone??? Very bad indeed. Be a responsible gun owner and do the right thing.

If you live within 1000 ft of a school and carry a long gun from your house to the trunk of your car that is parked on the street, would that be breaking the law?

I too have a Jeep and soft cases, if your cases have double zippers run a lock through the zipper ends. If they don't maybe buy new cases.

P.S. the locks dont have to be bomb proof.
A gun, like any other source of power, is a force for either good or evil, being neither in itself, but dependent upon those who possess it.

Yes, and your driveway too if it is not gated.

                            I disagree with this part.

Because we're talking about long guns, it's Federal law - California GFSZ doesn't cover long guns.

Federal law doesn't have the 'public place' confusion, it just exempts private property.

If we had been discussing handguns then the driveway thing would probably correct.
