New Rifle Surprise followed by Confusion

I've been on Calguns for awhile and have focussed on revolvers and never rifles. I've been around guns for decades but the whole AW thing has freaked me. I'm almost retired and jail is not where I want my grandkids to visit me so I am scrupulous about being legal. Anyway, I was in Brea yesterday when I got into a long discussion with a FFL clerk (retired LEO) about the "bullet Button" and how you can have Evil Features but with a "non-detachable" 10 round mag. Holy Guacamole! I've fired the M-16 in the military and wanted one in the worst, legal way. The blind mag wells and pinned mag lowers just didn't do it for me since you had to open the gun like a break-open shotgun to load ten more. This is great stuff!! I ordered a legal lower and will pick it up in ten days. WHy does it take so long for this stuff to come out? Now guys, the tough part. How do I configure the rifle? Do I configure compact (M4-like), target, varmint, like today's M-16 or maybe how about an old M-16 V'Nam Black Rifle?

Easy, one of each. I just ordered my third upper. I have a 16" featureless and a varminter already so the new one will be a 20" bullet button.

For my build I have a receiver and plan on getting a 16" upper so I will have the M4 style and I will also get a M16 style upper. When I'm trying to decide between two guns I usually just buy both, just like the AK and AR I now have both

I joined the .mil crowd in the late 90's so was around to see the transition from M16's to M4's, especially for NCO's. I am very partial to a carbine, matter of fact, the longest barrel I would ever want to own is 18", if it works on an SPR there's no reason to go any longer. Better yet, a 16" barrel is the way to go, accuracy does not suffer and you get a shorter, lighter and more balanced rifle in the end.

For you, I would suggest splitting the difference between nostalgic dinosaur 20" A1/2 and young buck carbine with a CAR or Xm177 clone.

In my opinion, THE BEST LOOKING AR-15 variant ever built:
