    Steel Targets

Just picked this up as a birthday present to myself from a new local shop (Big Shot in Miramar, care of Your Target) for $160. It's AR500 steel, and should take .308 all day at 100+ yards without much, if any denting. I'm taking it out to the desert tomorrow with my M1A, Rem 700, and AR15. Should be a blast! It was very affordable, IMO, for the kind of quality described to me. I'll report back on how the steel holds up after we get back.

If it's AR500 it wont but hits on the stand itself will!

You need to be 25yds plus to shoot at steel with 9/45 to avoid fragmentation

Tell your buddies to try their hardest not to hit the bar stock. I got the same type of setup from Big Shot not too long ago. Although its a solid and mobile setup shooting the bar stock in any spot will make it a ***** pain in the *** to get the legs and hanger on/off.

I spent about an hour with my dremel when I got back just to get the damn thing apart from 3 shots to the bar.

nothing like hearing that ding! though!

I would tilt the angle of the target body so its not perpendicular to the ground, better for downward deflection of projectiles, more like this [ / ] ...

                    ............... Nice target

That's a spinning target. It absorbs the impact and the projectile falls to the ground.

Guy said he shoots his with .308 and all it does is nick the paint. And that even 300 win mag will only leave small dents, as long as it's 200yds or more. So it's supposed to be some real tough steel. I'm gonna stick to american eagle ammo or FMJ gun show reloads. Should I avoid using the DAG 7.62 surplus stuff? Listed as "Cupro-nickel plated steel jacketed, lead core bullet."

For sure on trying to avoid the stand though... in retrospect, I probably should have gotten the 2' cross bar... oh well.

I have some AR400 steel targets and so far only 25-06 and some Mosin rounds have managed to make it through it at 100 yards.

I wouldnt shoot the surplus magnetic stuff at 100yds but that's just me, my buddy shoots mosin ammo at his and makes a tiny mark on it when shooting that close. You should be gtg beyond 100 preferably 200. I put a big dent in my tiny man (3''x3'') ipsc at about 120yds with some old magnetic lake city 308 that's why I wouldnt try it ever again with magnetic surplus.
