    AR in 7.62x39

I an thinking of an alternative ar caliber looking at lots of options from 6.5 ,6.8 300aac all seem cool but ammo availability seem to be an issue. so i think i want to go 7.62x39 but have heard of feeding problems due to straight mags. So my question is who has run one of these and is the feeding really an issue if so is there a fix . thanks

    heard the same thing

I run a few 6.8's, love them, if you reload then ammo/cost is not a big issue, if you don't, then yeah cost is an issue.

    New year, new hobby? (reloading)

I do reload but i save money by picking up range brass lots of 223 and 308 and now noticing more boxer primed 762x39 so that has sparked my interest and i also have a ak

I have an AR in 7.62x39 as well. Its a really fun gun and ammo is a little cheaper than 5.56 I have a couple ASC 7.62x39 10 round mags and some c-products 7.62 30 round rebuild kits for when I go to Nevada. Picked them up from Exile Machine. The rifle never fed reliably with my 5.56 pmags or GI mags. The wider round would make the magazine bulge and the nose of the round dips down and jams.

so the problem you feel is using 223 ar mags not the arch of the mags or lack of

Its a combination of the curve, the body, and the follower. If you look at a pic of a AR7.62 30 rounder, it has a big curve like an AK.

Here are pics of a couple 10 round mags. 5.56 on left, 7.62 on right. Notice the 7.62 mag has a slanted base that helps push the nose of the round up.

Another head on pic of the mags. Again 5.56 on left 7.62 on right. You can clearly see the rounds tend to point down in the 5.56 mag.

I read somewhere that 6.8 SPC straight mags work, but I cant remember where or who said it.

The CProducts mags are cheap and work great. Get the 30 rounder as a rebuild and all will be well.

Use a heavier rated hammer spring to ignite the hard primer Russian rounds and all is good.

7.62x39 AR is GTG , I have one and I like it so much that I'm in the process of building another as an AR Pistol... just make sure you get a model 1 enhanced firing pin and a wolff extra power hammer spring and you'll be able to shoot any ammo from cheap surplus to regular federal and remington ammo. ACS magazines are the new company doing these mags after C-products went under Jan 2010... I have about 15 of their mags and 4 c-products mags and they all work good, seems like they (ASC) OEM the AR-Stoner mags from midway as I have a couple of those and they are pretty much identical. HTH.

I've got 4 C-Products 10-rounder mags, and all of them feed perfect.

Yeah I just had to order a model 1 firing pin. I was able to fire some russian surplus fine with my regular pin, but all my wolf and tula were a no go.

Hello Level 10 If you do get AR15 762x39 consider this! Buy a complete rifle from a builder with history with 762x39 platform. This will help eliminate a lot of the problems u read here. I got my 762x39 bushmaster in 90's and like others that have posted the biggest problem was using wrong mags. Also stay away from lacquered ammo, brass case works the best. It will cost a little more but it works better with tighter tolerances of ar platform. I see ar15 pistols at range by SAOD and they shoot flawless tight groups at 100yrds.
