do i really need to buy a gun safe before buying a .22 rifle or can i jst store it in a locked container/case?

No! You can buy a gun lock or lock it in a case. -
You only *legally* need to keep it locked if there are children, felons, or mental cases who COULD gain access to it. This includes but is not limited to your's or your child's friends.
I don't keep mine locked all the time and the only child with access is myself.
I do keep locks with them always should the need arise.
