So, I was looking at a kit with this upper. I was looking to make a M4 clone but don't M4s have a 14.5" barrel? Since we have to have a 16" barrel anywho, is this a fair enough mockup?

Should be fine if you have the FFL permanently attach a muzzle device ( muzzle brake or compensator for featureless, flash hider for Bullet Button'd rifle ) so that the barrel length is a good 16".So, I was looking at a kit with this upper. Oh, it'll be BB'd, featureless, etc. doncha worry.
Hey, while I am at it, I thought the diff between an A2 and an A3 was a removable carry handle, is that right or not? 20" barrel and A2 stock, of course.
Always appreciate in the input.Last edited by mike_the_wino; 12-29-2011, 11:35 PM.Comment

doesnt have to be an FFL if you have the tools/know how, you can do it at home if you wanted to.....Comment

14.5" if you want to look cool. pinned fh gets you to 16.1"... It is very acceptable and makes the rifle look that much better. If you seek peace, prepare for warComment

Thats right, not exactly, but the main visual difference between an A2 and A3 is the DCH. There are M16A2s and AR15A2s, but few people know that anyway. We all key off of what the military has not realizing that the AR15 civilian platform had its own version numbering too. Colts original AR15A2 was equal in appearance to the military M16A1. M16A3 and AR15A3 are not the same either. Now we have A4s in the mix.
google and read.Comment

Diesselpower is correct on the numbers don't all ways match up with the military.
The A2 has a fixed carry handle and the A3 is a flat top upper.
The thing that I like is on the A3 they went back to full auto, that 3 round burst on the A2 sucked as it can stick and only fire 2 or 1 round if you did not complete the full 3 round burst previously. It is not a fun surprise.Comment
