Mil dot holdover disagreement

So a Remington 700 .300 wm I just put together for someone has a Leupold LRT on it, and the max dial up is 42 MOA over his zero. It equals out to about 1150 yards. If trying to hit a 1700 yard target (size known), wouldn't the correct calculation be to subtract the drop in MOA at 1700 yards which is 88.2 based on data from JBM ballistics and a correct chrono average, from 42, which is the scope maxed out, which would be 46.2 MOA. IF one MIL at 100 yards = 3.43 MOA, at 1700 it should be 58.3 MOA or a 1.7 MIL holdover max dial up right? We're going back and forth over it. Any help? Thanks.

Mil and moa are measure of angles, stop thinking about distances and inches. Its easier to do the conversions first since your mil reticle and moa knobs are not matching, ie the same graduation. A mil is 3.6 moa. The Army teaches 3.5 but that is a rounding off to make caculations easier, yet less accurate. So your scope can do 42 moa which is 11.6 mils (42 / 3.6). You need 88.2 moa which is 24.5 mil (88.2 / 3.6). You need to hold over 12.9 mils (24.5 - 11.6). Your going to need a whole lot more scope travel, or sloped base to get a 300 win mag out the 1700. It may get there, but its very impractical and probably not accurate as the bullet is going to go sub sonic a little past 1000 yds.

Standard Rem 700 & LRT? Divine Intervention is your best hope.

Unless you have a solid match grade rifle this is a ~1.5 MOA capable combo with 190gr match ammo. For 1700 yards that's about 2700 inches (1.57 x 1700) or 222 feet.

Actually, more like 26 inches (~1.5*17).... Not that I think that rifle/round is gonna do 1700 anyways, just a polite correction .

175gr smk .308 at 1200ft, 2700 fps, is gonna be going transonic most likely somewhere around 1000 yards.....
