I recently purchased an SGL-21 and I was thinking of putting a flash hider on it but when I removed the muzzle brake I noticed the threads are huge and not the standard ak thread. I believe Saiga's come with a thread protector welded on and it looks like that is what's threaded, can I remove that to expose the true ak threads?

SGL-21 muzzle device question

Even if you remove the front sight base to remove the attached larger threads; the muzzle underneath does not have any threading. It's a bare muzzle
I had an SGL-21 as well. You're basically stuck with the brake from Arsenal or just a thread protector, unless you want to pay to have the barrel threaded."If it wears out, replace it. If it breaks, upgrade." -Cranky Air Force Vet.

You can get a bulgarian flash hider
K-VAR has been the largest online supplier of rifles, handguns, shotguns, and gun parts in the USA since 1993. Shop our selection of gun accessories and gun ammo online and find everything you need in one convenient place.
I'll take that 74 brake off your hands if you want to get rid of it.

My understanding is that the muzzle is threaded 24x1.5 which is the standard AK-74 threading.
You can google 24x1.5 flash to look for devices that will fit the existing threads.Comment

I lol'd at "true ak threads". Like the 24 mm ones are fake.Comment

Ok, I didn't know that. So you can just remove the sight post, thread the barrel and then get a new front sight? I'm going to search to see what I can find for the existing threads and if I don't find anything I like I'm going to look into ditching the front sight and threading the barrel. Thanks.Comment

Get ready to pry open your wallet for that job.Ok, I didn't know that. So you can just remove the sight post, thread the barrel and then get a new front sight? Also, completely voids any warranty with Arsenal."If it wears out, replace it. If it breaks, upgrade." -Cranky Air Force Vet.

Don't wreck a perfectly good rifle. It's supposed to have the larger 24mm threaded front sight base. There are plenty of available breaks and flash hiders which will fit the existing threads on your rifle. The Bulgarian four piece flash hider / muzzle break will work for what you want to achieve. That front sight base on your rifle is Russian made and worth $$$. There are no threads under it.
It's available at many places such as:
