I have an older M1A. Do I need to install a bullet button to be legal?

You are only allowed one of the following.
Pistol grip-You don't have that.
detachable magazine-You do have that.
Flash hider- You do have that.
So you have two of the above on your rifle. Thus you have an assault weapon. Usually folks change the flash hider to a recoil reducer. They sell them all over so get one.
By changing the flash hider to a recoil reducer you do not need a bullet button which are a pain in the neck and limit you to ten round mags. If you go with the recoil reducer you can keep using your 20 or 30 round mags.Last edited by cannon; 11-25-2011, 6:32 PM.^^ Said by some lunatic on the internetComment

As bohoki already suggested, if the rifle has a flash hider then it would be illegal without a magazine lock. The OP says he has an "older" M1A. The ones sold in California before 2000 came with flash hiders. Most people just replace the flash hider with a muzzle brake instead of modifying the mag release to fixed mag configuration.__________________

You can have all of the "evil" SB23 features that you want as long as your semi-auto rifle doesn't have a detachable magazine.

Buddy, Welcome to Calguns. As has been said, your rifle is fine with that muzzle brake on it. You are also free to run normal capacity (20 round) mags that you have owned prior to the ban. You are also free to rebuild damaged normal capacity magazines by replacing worn components. You're a man after my own heart. Rifles, Guitars, and Motorcycles. Doesn't get any more "freedom loving" than that. ;-) Have a good holiday.Comment

Thanks guys! Yes, guns, guitars, and motorcycles are my passions in life.
Nothing better than partaking in all 3 activities in the same day. Hmmm,
maybe I could pull that off on Sunday...
