AK rear sight question.

    AK rear sight question.

    I recently bought a polish AKMS and love it, shoots like a dream. But something about it is bugging me... the rear sight does the normal 10 to 1 countdown for range but behind the 1 it has an "S" mark. When I put it on the S mark it raises it up instead of continuing to go down. I was thinking it may be a spot to zero the weapon on but I figured I'd ask to see if anyone knows for sure...

    This is not my picture though it looks just like this,

    I think your talking about the battle sight. Its the setting you would use for targets out to a certain range under combat conditions.

      I sight my rifle in at 25yards under that setting, slide the bar to the "1" position and never move it again after that.

        If my memory serves me right that S is designed for quick close quarters shooting. Meaning anything below 100 Meters. I think and if I'm wrong I humbly stand corrected.

          That "S" is equivalent to 300M. Night time engagement, you're not sure of the distance to target, pull the rear sight to "S". Anything within 300M is in the "kill zone."

            That is the battlefield setting, if your rifle has been zeroed correctly then you can aim anywhere COM and get a good hit out to 300m.
