PSA upper decision

I want to upgrade from my 16" DPMS to one of these . But I cant make up my mind hope you understand why im asking dumb newb questions . Just want to make the best purchase for my budget 400-500.

Uppers I wish I could compare to, or get as close to Colt, DD, BCM as far as dependability, durability , accuracy, and military grade possible.
Ive been researching the barrel steel PSA offers 2 different kinds , hammerforged or 4150 cmv.
Which metal should I go with?

Also I need to make up my mind in barrel size . I like my 16in , but im thinking of a 20 in barrel.

What I want to do with my rifle . Mostly target shoot, Irons sights and probably mount a scope when I want to do some distance shooting. Then maybe a Red dot when I feel like being a ninja. Im going to keep it featureless .

hammer forged is not a metal type but the method to make the barrel. They are both 4150cmv I believe, just the one that doesn't say hammer forged is a cut barrel.

Honestly I'd just get a 16" unless you really want the 20".

PSA does 4140, 4150 and 4150 CHF.

The standard 4140 and 4150 barrels are button rifled though, not cut.

I just sold my upper a hour ago.
Which is better Im guessing the hammer forged since its 100 $$ more. How are they compared to colt. Is it close. I know any of those would be better than the dpms I sold.

Hammer forged is better for a combat / high round count type application, stainless for precision.

Did you have any issues w your last upper?

Get the midlength 16" upper then have the barrel cut to 14.5 and perm attach a muzzlebrake/compensator. Between hammer forged or not, i dont think youll ever be able to tell the difference. I Think milspec M4s are just standard 4150 cmv steel. Its good enough for professionals. Doubt you will put it through more abuse than they do.

Before you spend money on a new upper, is there something specifically wrong with your current upper? If you are upgrading, just in hopes of increasing performance, accuracy, reliability, then I don't believe the PSA will have a drastic increase in any of those categories.

If your current upper is broken, malfunctioning, or you are switching to a totally different style, go for it. I would suggest the more expensive, hammer forged barrel, over stainless.

Thanks for the info guys. Upgrade means to get better quality AR . The dpms upper was my first. The dpms worked great. But I saw the PSA deals and had a chance to sell my upper and I went for it. It was a impulse sell but I want to be a little wiser on my purchase. I go to Camp Pendleton every 2 months . And I really like the colts Ive seen . So I want something as good. And also to be honest when I go shooting with my in laws and his buddy I have the cheapest rifle . They have a stag 16in. and a 18in BCM stainless. We shoot with Irons sights. So maybe I can get the advantage by getting the 20 in. We will eventually work up to scopes and I want to shoot 300 to 500 meters.
I was able to out shoot them with my dpms.

Yup ammo is always good . I agree with that one.

They're sold out right now but I'd look to get the PSA upper with the 20" FN Stainless Steel hammer forged barrel and Midwest Industries free float handguard.

If you end up preferring a 16" they did have a 16" stainless steel .223 Wylde upper with Midwest Industries free float. This is sold out for now as well.

I have their 16" mid-length but I probably should have got the 14.7" with pinned flash hider and I also really like their 16" Dissipator.
