700 Trigger Question?

I took my Remington 700P out today to adjust the trigger and have fun.
I couldn't adjust the trigger down where i wanted. I would Like 2 ponds.
So my question is who makes the best drop in trigger for the Money?

How much are you willing to spend? Look up Jewell triggers.

Jewell is the way to go! The one on my AR50 is great! I had them set it at 1lb but they gave also gave me a little bag of springs that I can use to adjust it way up to 4lbs or even down to about 2oz if I feel like changing it.

I have a timmey or tinney I cant remember wich. Personally I think its a great inexpensive trigger for a 700. The only problem I had was when I started adjusting it I originally set it so low that if you closed the bolt to hard the gun discharged. Luckily the trigger was easy to adjust and ive loved it ever since. I know Midway sells them and it seems like they always have them on sale. Good luck!

Timney.....all the way...BUT DO CHECK IT VERY THOROGHLY after setting it.

First, I replaced the stock trigger with a Rifle Basix for a year. Then, after having a problem with that trigger, I called Jewell and ordered directly from them. If you know exactly what you want, you can find Jewell triggers cheaper at Midway or other online stores. Since, I called and spent 30+ minutes with someone at Jewell, I figured that I should order directly from them. You could also look into getting a Shilen trigger or a Rifle Basix. If your on a budget, then I'd consider a timney. I put a Timney on an unissued Yugo Mauser and I can say it was the best $27 upgrade that I've ever done to a firearm.

I don't know how the Remington stock trigger adjusts. I've never had one. To be honest, I'm not sure how to adjust the Jewell right now. I've never had to do it. It was pre-set to order at the factory and it's not here right now. So, I can't look at it.

The Rifle Basix has a good reputation as a field trigger. It doesn't get testy when it gets dirty like the Jewell can.

+1 : ONCE YOU LEARN the "ins'n'outs" of the 700 trigger, it is really easy to adjust/test/safety-check, etc. I could have adjusted mine lighter, but @ just over 2lbs- breaks like the proverbial "glass toothpick."

For a target gun (and a very light trigger pull) go with the Jewell. For a field rifle just adjust the Remington trigger. I've had a number of them adjusted in the past without problems. They break clean and I've gotten as low as 2.5 lbs. and have them function with perfect reliability even in some dirty and rough environments.

Very well said. I keep my adjustables FOR THE FIELD guns at between 3 1/2 to 4 1/2. The target models at about 2...maybe 2.5.

The stock trigger wont go under 5 pounds. Of coarse im not an Armorer. When adjusting under 5 LBS it wont reset with the bolt. When i say adjusting im only moving the two screws. Im probably doing something wrong. Someone suggested using stones to smooth trigger out. I don't know about doing this. I only shoot paper with this rifle. So two pounds is OK for me. I will just buy a Jeweled trigger drop in.

Don't stone anything. There are 3 screws to adjust, not just two.

The top front screw adjusts trigger overtravel. The bottom front screw adjusts spring tension on the trigger in effect pushing it into engagement with the sear. The rear screw on the housing unit adjusts sear engagement and the sear engagement setting must be "co-ordinated" with the trigger's spring tension setting.

My approach is to leave the trigger overtravel screw alone, and save that for last if it needs adjusting. With the action cocked, turn the sear engagement screw in until the the firing pin releases. Keep in mind these are very sensitive engagements and very minor almost imperceptible adjustments can mean the difference between just enough & too much. If you adjust the sear engagement alone you should be able to get a decent pull. The trick is to get a better than decent pull and you'll have to adjust the trigger's spring tension screw (bottom front) in concert with the sear adjustment. The sear adjustment that worked OK with the spring tension screw fully in may slip if you back off the spring tension screw, but properly backing off the tension is how you achieve a "softer" felt pull. You'll just have to play with it a bit to find what works best.

After you've set the pull - and cycling the action quickly & checking the safety is the best way to check function, not just raising & lowering the bolt without moving it rearward - you can adjust the over travel screw (top front) to give almost no over travel or alot.

I've used this approach on about a dozen of my 700s and 721s and 40X rifles. Never had a problem after and most of these rifles are target, not hunting.
