It's not pinned. There are no threads. That is a muzzle cover and was pressed on.

There's also no detent pin installed.

I call it a thing because it's not slanted, slotted or drilled to perform like a muzzle break.
          They're called muzzle thread protectors.

Dremel, carefully cut at 12 and 6 o-clock not all the way trough and using flat head screwdriver pry it open by rotating screw driver in the cut channel.

A dremel and a hammer are the tools I reach for most often when working on AKs

we have a winner, and yes if you have a dremel and are careful you should be able to remove it easily

                        Thanks guys...last question...

Are there threads under there? If not, is it possible to upgrade to a new muzzle brake like a PWS FSC47, Tapco, or Romanian style brake?

I'm 95% sure its a Lancaster Arms 3060. However, the tag hanging on the rifle had a part number that didn't coincide with anything on Lancaster Arms website. It had a strange part number on it...

I am 100% sure its a Lancaster Arms though and the 3060 is an exact match with regard to how it looks.

You can always get it threaded.

That is an odd looking barrel nut. If it's pressed on, then why does it have flats on it for a wrench and why does it have notches in it for the detent pin. Obviously, the detent pin is not present and I'm guessing it is pressed on.

I just checked AK-builder and they have a thread adapter for pressed on barrel nuts. So I guess they exist. Also, another option (preferably), a LH die specifically made to thread the end of unthreaded barrels is readily available, assuming the barrel is the right diameter. I don't know of a source off hand.

You would also need a detent pin if you want a threaded muzzle break. This would require you to remove the front pin of the front site to install it. I think APEX has them.

To remove the barrel nut, I would tap it from behind with a block of wood (or a punch) and a hammer and tap lightly. Since you are able to spin it, it should come off easily. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply...Is this what you were talking about? http://ak-builder.com/index.php?disp...oduct_id=30090

Regarding the other ideas...it sounds like it might be best to take this to a armorer. Maybe I can find someone or somewhere local to do the work. Hhmmmm....I'll have to think about this for a while.

                                Thanks everyone...
