    Unusual AK74 build question

I would love an AK74 pistol, but apparently they don't exist. Could I build from a legit Krink kit on a virgin receiver, sell the stock, and use a pistol trunnion?

e: Let's just head off the whole "DON'T BAN 5.45" right now since there are already 5.45 receivers out there registered as pistols.

Yes, it's all been done before. You will need to build from a flat or have an 07 do the work and DROS as a single shot.

Probably less than a dozen, which is why it isn't on the BATFE's radar. Don't be the ***hole that gets surplus 5.45 ammo banned from import.

There's a very good reason why it's banned from discussion at certain forums: http://www.theakforum.net/phpBB3/vie...p?f=3&t=129683

      Just say no.

Is there anything but the ammo ban fear stopping the usual suspects from producing one? Is there some reason it's less practical than an AK-47 style pistol? As if it could get less practical, that is

Whoah, I though the cat was "out of the bag" and it was legit to just keep on with it now, since the ammo hasn't been banned. If it's still a problem it's cool to close this thread.

Perfectly legal to build a pistol from an 80% receiver for
Your own use as a single shot with a barrel longer than 6", and an OAL longer than 10.5" (that is the one exemption from the approved handgun roster in CA)
It is then legal to convert it to semi auto so long as it dies not meet the definition of a banned semi auto pistol in CA (read fixed magazine [bullet button] with 10
Round maximum capacity if the magazine is outside of the pistol grip).
Never read anywhere about banned calibers except .50BMG (and IIRC that is for rifles).

If you take the next step I am sure you can figure out the answer to
          Your question.

You'll need to do your homework for the barrel. The 5.45 needs to spin fast to stabilize, and if you chop down a 16" rifle barrel, it's not gonna group for you. You'll need to get a specific 1 in 6 twist 5.45 barrel, Bluejack has em' over on the AKforum. So far I've built up 4 Krinks (All rifles) using his barrels and they're great to work with. The barrel journal is .020" over spec to allow for trunnion differences.
