22-24" AR10 dpms pattern options

I'd like to build a flat top DPMS style AR10 for long range shooting. Solid out to 800 yards or so. Need to round out my collection.

What are your thoughts on barrel length for the .308 AR10, is 22" a good give/take? I've seen some bolt guns as long as 26" for the .308.

It will be used for target shooting and deer.

What can I get done for around $1500 w/out optic? Anyone having good deals/sales on something like this whether it's an upper or complete gun?

1500 is borderline. If you honest and truly don't care about your rifle's weight you can get a DPMS 24" bull upper in 308 for probably 700. Then just a lower, parts kit and A2 stock and be around 1200 or so.

My opinion is that target and hunting uppers for the .308 are two completely different beasts.

Those long heavy barrels are fine for the bench but to me way to heavy to tote around the woods. Plus realistically when are you ever going to shoot a animal that far away.

I'd go with a 18" barrel, the additional velocity of a longer barrel isn't needed unless you're doing 1000 yard target shooting. It's also lighter which counts for a lot when hunting.

If you're going to go short 16" is all you need. My 16" 308 is just under 2500fps with 175SMK and varget. Just don't put a muzzle brake on it unless you like cymbals crashing against your head every time you pull the trigger...

I went with the 20" heavy barrel that is found on the TAC20. Its not the bull barrel but slightly heavier than that the standard or flutted version. So far, I'm very happy with it. A Tactical Machine lower is in the near future.

My thoughts exactly.

Get a lighter upper (16-18 in) for hunting and the 24in heavy bull barrel upper for long-range shooting. That way, you can shoot from the same platform/lower.
