Newb range question - AR style with BB loading?

Its time to turn my paper weights into something, i havent been here in a while, but quick newbie question:

If i have my CA legal AR style black rifle equipped with a fixed 10rd mag and a BB. do i still have to break it open and topload when at the range? or do i use my tool to remove the mag.

I searched the forum but havent had too much luck (its probably staring at me in plain site)

    Any help or advice appreciated.

As long as you need a tool to release the magazine, its all legal. U do not need to break open the rifle and top load. If u have a prince 50 mag lock, that is another issue, but with the normal bullet buttons or raddlocks, it is legal to use a tool to release the mag.

please make sure you are using the Prince 50 Bullet Button, NOT the Prince 50 set screw.

If the button is stopped from being "pushed" by using a set screw... YES YOU MUST OPEN UP THE UPPER/LOWER TO LOAD. This was the Prince 50 magazine lock.

If you use a "bullet tip" or similar tool to depress the magazine lock via a small hole in the magazine release button (which is a fake button), then you can remove the magazine and load it.... then reinsert it. That is a Prince 50 Bullet Button.

Therefore if you have a Prince 50, P50 which a a set screw locking the button, you must open the Upper/Lower and load the magazine while its locked in the firearm. So just because you are using a "tool" doesnt give you the right to unlock the magazine on a complete firearm.

If you have a Prince 50 Bullet Button, the Magazine Release button is fake. Its a shroud that has a small hole in it that only allows a bullet tip to push the magazine release arm. This means the firearm itself can not accept a magazine that is capable to be detached...so even without a magazine installed the firearm lacks the means to detach a detachable magazine without the use of a tool.... to push the arm. So you can use a tool to detach the magazine.

Oh, got it. I don't have any of those. I have a Vamfire MLD on one of my rifles. The shroud on that is manipulated with a set screw. I was thinking it was the same thing.

There is also the new CONVERTABLE BULLET BUTTON from Prince 50 which can be set in 3 different positions. He might be using it an have the set screw tightened all the way down into position one.

Here are the 3 positions it is capable of...

                          1) Maglock Mode (top load the rifle)
                          2) Bullet Button mode (use a tool to drop the magazine)
                          3) Regular magazine release mode (for when you travel to a free-state for a course).

A lot of people are not aware of the new button. But it's been available for a while now.

You use a set screw and allen wrench to change which mode it is in.

So he really needs to post a picture (take a digital picture and host it on a site like Photobucket.com that hosts images for free and then post it here) so we can tell which of the 3 different Prince 50 products for the AR he is really using. Until then we are just guessing.

People make a big deal out having a bullet button. But honestly, it's not that big of a deal. Especially if all you are doing is plinking at the range where ultra-fast magazine changes are not needed nor is hi-capacity magazines. Would I prefer to use the regular magazine release button and hi-caps, sure. But I personally like the feel and controllability of the regular grip and length of the adjustable stock set on the very first notch. So for me a bullet button equiped rifle makes sense. When I take an out of state carbine course, all I have to do is loosen the red upgrade button from Vampfire in my 1rst Gen bullet button 4-5 twists and it functions like a normal magazine release button. Takes maybe two seconds. And I have a bunch of pre-ban magazines that are hi-caps. While I'm in state and plinking at the range I don't mind using a bullet or punch to change my 10/20 and 10/30 magazines. It is not like I get a lot of chances to run and gun inside CA. When I do take a carbine course inside CA, I just deal with the slower magazine changes. It is built into the course to allow for it.

Notice that my ARs use the 1st Generation Bullet Button Shroud with the upgraded button from Vamphire. If you tighten the original button it came with or the red upgrade button down too far it acts like a maglock instead of a bullet button. The solution is to loosen it so that when you insert a bullet tip or other tool into the shroud the magazine drops freely. That is how it was designed to work. There is nothing wrong with tightening it down all the way and top loading, except that if the magazine is seated funny you will get a lot of jams and malfunctions.

Picture of the Prince 50 Maglock that requires top loading only.

Picture of the Prince 50 Gen 1 Bullet button that is a shroud and will allow you to insert a tool to drop the magazine if loosened and adjusted properly or if tightened all the way down function like the maglock shown above. With the red upgrade FreeLock button from Vampfire will also act like a normal magazine release when loosened even more.

See my rifles above for the installed view.

Picture of the new Convertable Bullet Button from Prince50 that can be a Maglock, Bullet Button, or Normal Magazine Release depending on how you adjust the set screw.

Picture of the Speed Funnel Bullet Button which I only just now learned about.
