    AR Build help

    I am assembling my first AR15 and have it almost all together but when I go to put the hand grip on it does not fit. Its like the male part on the lower is to thick for the female part on the grip. Any suggestions???

    Also when I try and connect my lower to my upper the front pivot pin gets stuck as it is going through the upper and the only way it will go through is if I tap it with a hammer. The back one goes in just fine

    I've had a couple magpul grips lately that have been a ***** to put on. Generally I just force them on. You could use some sand paper or a file to the inside of the grip (not the receiver) to open it up a little.

      That is what I was thinking but I also tried three other grips and had the same problem

        I agree. A small jewlers file will fit perfectley in there and file away some of the grip material and I am sure it will fit on fine. good luck.

          File the grip as suggested. Fitment on every grip I've had has been hit or miss. As far as the pivot pin, both of my builds have been pretty tight to the point I had to give it a good smack with my had. It should loosen up after a while.

            DON'T file anything. Place the grip in an oven @ 150 for 20 minutes, or place it in boiling water for 10. This is make it flex a bit. Place one side of the ear on and Rock the grip to get the other ear on, wrap it with a towel and use a hammer to tap it on.

            tight = good
            loose = bad

            Boiling water is also the best way to turn a light colored plastic piece to a dark color. You can turn a tan grip black by using Black Rit dye in boiling water.

            To assemble the upper and lower. install the front pivot pin and CRUSH the backs together while lightly tapping the rear take-down pin with a hammer.

            again... tight = good, loose is wobble = bad... or at least annoying.

                tight = good. thats why. Its not a flaw or a mistake. Its done on purpose.

                A2 grips are cheap and rely on the screw to hold them down solid. Aftermarket grips hold tight on the sides as well.

                    It'll go. I've never used heat at all, just spent some time working it.

                    Get it started, then drop in the selector detent and spring, then tap the grip down and snug it up with the screw.

                    On the upper/lower pins, the front is a pivot pin, the rear is the takedown pin.

                    Hold the upper against the lower with the front holes aligned and the upper hinged forward. Slide the pin into place.
                    It will be tight the first few times.

                    Once it is in, then hinge the upper back onto the lower and pop the rear (takedown) pin into place.
                    If you secure the rear pin first, it will almost always be difficult to secure the front pin.
