Haven't used anything smaller than 69gr SMKs, which work well loaded mag-length w/Varget/H335. Use them at 200 and 300 and they group well. Normally go to 77 or 80s for 500 and out.

.223 at 800-1000 is doable and a competitive cartridge with conditions, 26" barrel min out of an AR, 80 grain handloaded Sierra/Berger/JLK VLD bullets, and careful wind doping/corrections with a good spotter/coach.

77 grain bullets are ok for mag length out to 300, 80's single load beyond 300 to give you good flight/feedback during the days shooting conditions.

90 grain bullets are optimal in a min 28" boltgun (1x7, 1x7.5") to get best velocity to take advantage of the bullet weight, 26" AR still loses too much velocity to gas usage unless you have a gas system cutoff feature (still losing 80 FPS avg. off a 28" boltgun barrel) .

80 grain bullets are a good compromise/balance to shoot longer distances BUT YOU NEED TO LEARN/READ WIND/MIRAGE.

Any tips or links you can direct me to for reading wind and mirage? Its a mil - dot and I have a good understanding of reading mils if that helps.
            Thanks!

Check out some of the articles on Accurateshooter.com....
But really there is no way to learn the wind than by shooting in it..... a LOT.

Sweet I will check it out! What trigger are you using? I'm leaning toward the SSA-E.

Come down to sac valley matches.Only way to learn is to do it.Good start with the White oak upper! You will need a bob sled single shot mag for the long range matches unless you want to pull your mag out after every shot.

Not so. Lots of people, including me, have shot slow fire matches with a regular magazine and never had to pull the mag. It just means getting your finger dirty.

But a Bob Sled is the nice way to go.

Another advantage to a bob sled is longer oal rounds .

It makes no difference how long the rounds are. I shot 80 grainers for years without a sled. Just a regular mag. You still have to single load them whether you're using a regular mag or a bob sled. It's no big deal. The sled just makes life easier. Ok, much easier.
