    Ballistol: a good lubricant?

Im looking for a very good lubricant for my AR 15 because the xm193 i shoot is the dirtiest ammo i have ever seen. After 200 rounds, very dirty and causes some problems. (FTE). Compared to 300 rounds of PMC that i fired before, yea dirty, but didnt cause problems like xm193 did.

    SO

i hear CLP is, eh okay for lube. How about Ballistol. ya know, the stuff you can ONLY get if you buy it directly from Germany. anyone use it? I have it, just not sure about it.

    THANKS!

I like Ballistol, but I rarely shoot my AR, so have little experience using it in an AR.

You can get Ballistol from Midway and probably Brownells.

    Or even Amazon:

I have used Ballistol since the 90's and it works very well.
The smell is a consideration especially if you perform your weapons maintenance inside.

            They are over-rated...

Remember, you're just lubing the bolt rings, the back of the bolt lugs and the four carrier skids...

Best I've used is called Phil's Tenacious Oil (I know, weird name), get it at high-end bicycle shops. It's a non-galling lube that stays where you put it. Doesn't gunk up, fly around or dry up.

              Gunsmith recommended, FWIW...

I use Militec-1. That stuff works great, but it's expensive. Try looking up Frog Lube. That seems to be getting good reviews. My brother is trying to get me to buy some, but I'm going to wait til I'm out of Militec. He's recommends Frog Lube to to all of the commands he reps to for work.

I use pro-shot grease and motor oil. But I grease (not oil) my bolt carrier, in fact probably 80% of my AR lubrication is with grease.

I purposely avoid products that claim to be both a solvent and a lubricant. In my simple world, if a product is 50/50, it is doing each job halfway. But I could be wrong, that happens a lot.

Ballistol is the original CLP used by the Nazis in WW2.
Its pretty similar to CLP except that it is biodegradable and is not harmful to your body, think of it as the Simple Green of gun care products.

Breathing in and absorbing Breakfree CLP through your skin does really bad things to your liver.

I think you have bigger issues than your choice of cleaning product. Your gun shouldn't be having malfunctions related to powder fouling after a mere 200 rounds.

That said, I think Ballistol is just about as good as Breakfree CLP.

does it also help with break-down of carbon while you shoot?

I use ballistol at my work and it does a good job as a lube (full auto MP-5s and Colt Commandos.)

                          The smell is distinctive, however.

I use Ballistol as a cleaner/protectant for my BP stuff (along with RIG) and on my milsurp bolt actions as it does not harm wood. I have yet to try it in the AR, (I use Mobil 1 oil and high temp wheel bearing grease in the ARs). If it makes a good replacement for Mobil 1 motor oil, then great, as the worst you can say about it is that it smells like armpit sweat on steroids.

I think I am going to try it in an AR on my next range trip...
