    Charging handle?

I was cleaning my stag 1h today, when I took out the charging handle I noticed it's scratched on the top like if it is rubbing. I then put it back in and started to cycle it after I lubed her up, I then noticed that there was a smell comming out of the charging handle area like a metal on metal smell. I seen my bushmaster and that one doesn't smell nor is it scracthed like the stag. Is this normal?

there are certain lubes that wok better on anodized aluminumm than others. Some lubes do not work on ano- Try one called EEZ-OX- from Solvang, CA. GREAT stuff for the AR. Gets rid of the cooking aluminum smell, and alot of noise associated with the ar's operation.

So the smell and scratching is normal in an AR? I used break free, after that is when I noticed the smell.

No, it's not normal! How are you cycling the charging handle? Why are you lubing it? It doesn't move much at all.
I use break free CLP too, but I only wipe parts down.

Mmmm sorta. I've noticed this on all my ARs, yes they wear there and yes a drop or two of lube there is fine. Take a tactical rifle class and you'll be using that charging handle a lot. Oh and yeah the weird metal on metal smell also. No big deal.

It's lube that dripped from the bolt carrier, and some minor wipe down on the charge handle.

Is the wear even? Some wear is normal - but too much in a short period of time and/or indicating a bad rub somewhere might be something else.

Also cycling the action might push some air with stale carbon/powder out of the action which you might think you are smelling metal from.

The wear is even, it's wearing on the sides, and on the top.

I have this on my CMMG. Sometimes I detect a smell almost like burning coming from the charging handle, like there's too much friction. I don't see any wear, though. This isn't after firing, either; it's after cleaning and lubing and function checking.
