hey everyone im new to ar15s i just purchased my first one its a s&w m&p 15 sport and wanted to know if anyone knows of any good reliable scopes for a reasonable price without having to pay as much as my rifle costs. Id appreciate any suggestions.

On one of my AR's I use to have I bought an NcStar 3-9 scope with a red dot for around 150 and it had 556 drop built in. it worked great for the 6 months I had it then I sold rifle w the scope and the guy still has it mounted its now a year and a hald and its still working good.

Depend entirely on your budget. You can spend 200-ish, or 2000 and beyond. Look for a scope with 1-4x. That way you get both short range and intermediate range capability.

I like the GRSC CRS the most of the three and it will most likely be my next optics purchase after I unload a few things. Its glass is very good for the money and the bullet drop compensated reticle makes long distance shooting easier and faster.

Some people run a red dot or holographic sight with a magnifier. Myself included, and I wish I knew then what I know now. The problem is when you use the magnifier, the dot is also magnified and at distance the dot can pretty much cover up your target. The other issue is weight. A single 1-4x scope can be lighter than the dot + magnifier setup.

If you aren't in the mood to spend much, Primary Arms has a pretty decent collection of their own scopes that won't break the bank.

Your rifle might change over the decades, but scopes you can keep and mount on the next one. I'll suggest some variety of Leupold -- I can't see any issues with mine (no fogging up, reticle is solid) after more than a decade even after I moved it from my carbine AR to my .308 Remington 700 for a short while. For that AR I've changed most of the other precision-impacting parts out over the years, but not the scope.

As for advice on specs it's a personal thing: with no magnification (iron sights) I can shoot within 3" of POA so six inch groups. That means with a 3x I can shoot two inch groups, and at the upper of 9x POA error is smaller than the error inherent to the rifle itself. At 9x shooting unsupported I can see my sweep at 100 yards is 4+ inches, while with irons it appears steady. Can't suggest anything for the other specs where my two scopes with 50mm objectives are crap compared to the Leupold, and I don't have any scopes with 30mm tube.

$200? Look at Primary Arms, do some research online on what they have that fits your budget. (Vortex Sparc)

Or, look for used examples of the ones I mentioned. Shoot with iron sights until you find something or can afford something like the GRSC. Anything for $200 new isn't going to have decent glass, features, or durability. Makes no sense to cheap out on optics. Can't hit what you can't see.

What are the back up sights primarly used for? Ex the magpul ones? I need something different than my iron sights theyre hard fOr me to use

When optics fail, you go to the back up iron sights. Hence "back up". Shooting with iron sights for a while will help you work on your fundamentals. IMHO, a cheap optic isn't really worth the money because they won't last long and it's still money spent. The Vortex Sparc have gotten some good reviews, but they are also known to fail. I had the more expensive Fastfire model and it failed with just shooting .22LR.

If you really don't care about quality and want to spend as little as possible, try the Bushnell TRS-25, $83 and change from Amazon. It will not give you any magnification. Just a simple red dot sight with brightness controls.
