    using the snake!

I was wondering if you should oil the bore snake cleaner when cleaning your AR barrel? I went to the range this past sunday and i just wanted to do a quick cleaning of the barrel.

Cleaning the bore snake, any particular brand of dish washing soap to use? Dawn?

I have heard no need for lube and also heard use lube. I use a conservative amount of lube.

for cleaning, I would just use some mild detergent (no strong fragrance) and hang dry.

I normally place a couple drops of CLP in between the brushes of the bore snake and run it through the barrel.

I would use the snake to clean and a mop to put a slight film of oil down the barrel. Doesn't matter if it's CLP or an actual oil but I use an actual lube after cleaning with CLP.

Generally when i do clean my rifle i always spray clp down the barrel let it soak for a min and run the bore snake about 4 times. Then i put a few drops of oil on the bore snake and run it through couple of times.

So i guess u really dont need to put oil on the snake or a light coat?

To clean the bore snake a lot of these dish washing det has some sort of fragrance. I guess ill have to buy the natural dish soap. A little mula but oh well.
                Thanks for the info

I'm sure some fragrance is ok, but some of those extra super duty remove concrete from wine glasses will be over the top.

also, my barrel is nitrade coated, and i'm sure just like chrome lined, you shouldn't need to put clp down the muzzle. please someone correct me if i'm wrong.

I normally don't field clean at the range. Too many variables, dusts in the wind, greater risk of dropping small parts.

I use the snake to clean. Spray cleaner (CLP or S&W synthetic) into the bore, rotate it a few times to make sure the bore is coated then let it sit for a few as I disassemble the bolt and BCG. While I have those parts sitting in cleaner, I run the snake through the bore 3 to 4 times depending on how many rounds since last cleaning. Then I squirt some lube down the bore and run a patch down the bore with a cleaning rod to evenly coat the bore. At this point I'm not too concerned about excess lube, it'll just get burned up the next time I shoot.

Thorough cleaning at home should reduce the need to field clean. I don't think the snake is a do-it-all system. It's really designed for quick field clean. A cleaning rod is good to have anyway in case you get a stuck casing.

Which end do the snake bore go into first?

Are there not instructions on the packaging? When inserting things into the bore, always go the same direction of travel as the bullet.

If you are going to clean your weapon, then clean it.

Get a rod and the proper jags, cotton patches, brushes and some real cleaning solution.

Unless you sterilize your "snake" what after using, or toss it (best idea yet), what, exactly are you wiping down your barrel after the first cleaning ???

I don't think the bore needs to be surgically clean. Excessive scrubbing with brush isn't beneficial either. If the barrel is in good condition and taken care of, there should enough pressure while shooting to blow most residue out. What you are cleaning is what is left behind. Bore snake is much less intrusive than a brush. The cleaning method I use was recommended by a builder of sniper rifles.

If you shoot corrosive ammo and do not have a chrome-lined barrel, then the brush and rod method would be necessary.
