Looking to purchase an AK in 5.45 x 39

I've heard about AK build party and such.

I was wondering can I build a complete rifle for $400 +/-

and

What parts do I need to get and where is a good place to start.

I so want to install a front sight base gas block (prefer to pin) and shorten the barrrel to 14.5 with pinned compensator.

I was also wondring if a Smith Vortex in 5.56 would work?

Yes you can build a complete rifle for $400. Parts kits for an AK74 run about 180 for a bulgarian, about 120 for a bulgy barrel, Theres a member here by the name of redchevyman selling them in the commercial deals section. You're saying you want to install the one piece gas block front sight? Any reason why? They run a bit because you'll either have to pull it from a parts kit, buy it off someone parting one out of buy a brand new one from k-var, all of which will run up the price. About $60 for build party entrance fee, figure $50 or so for a flat, compliance parts, rivets and you should be good. A smith vortex will run up your price as well as the gas block front sight as I've said. Why do you want to shorten the barrel? It can also be done but probably won't be able to be done at most build parties. It will probably add to your cost.

i would give up on either the shortening and one piece gas block or the $400 limit

also, a smith vortex would have to fit on the 21mm threads i believe they are. I don't think smith makes any that size, because the comp will actually thread onto the front sight base. its possible, you can possibly push back the front sight base and thread the barrel but again that raises your cost. You would have to give on something or give up on this project all together

Another option would be to install the FSB/GB combo and leave the barrel full length with a slip over fake can. Legally you have to have a 16" barrel anyway. You might as well get everything you can out of it, rather than cutting it down only to then permanently attach an extender.

Also I shy away from cutting any chrome lined barrel. The chrome lining does not take well to cutting, and re-crowning. It tends to crack, and chip which is Death to your accuracy when on the crown.
