    On the fence....help me decide

I'm thinking about putting a new project together - a Rem 700. Like other threads I've read, I'm trying to decide between getting it in 308 or 223 configuration. I know this has been discussed before (several times ), I just want to make sure I'm taking everything into consideration. I know some of it comes down to personal preference, some like the bigger kick from a 308, and the big boom it makes on the targets. Here is what I'm taking into consideration on my decision:

I live in the far South Bay, in Salinas near Monterey. Currently the only rifle I own is a Sig 522, for cheap plinking both indoor and outdoors. I really like the idea of getting into long range precision shooting, and I think the 700 is the right platform to start with. From what I can tell, my range options for this part of the state is pretty limited. I have the Metcaf range that's between home and work, so that's pretty handy. Their furthest target they have on a normal basis is 100 yards, and a 200 yard on special occasions.

I know there are some BLM areas not too far from here, off 152 and 5 that I can go shoot at as well. With those choices, I can see myself going to the range a few times a week, and possibly hitting the BLM areas a few times a year. I know if I start doing that, I need to acquire my own targets, and get a setup for going out on my own. From what I've read, it seems like a 223 would be good out to around 300 to maybe 500 yards or so, and anything beyond that is 308 territory. I really don't know how often I'd get the chance to really stretch out and go for some real long distances - not that I wouldn't love the chance.

223 seems to be cheaper to shoot, which is always a plus. It seems to me like the right way to start out, would be to get a 223 now, and possibly move on to a second rifle at a later date in a 308 setup. Anything I'm overlooking? I'd appreciate any thoughts you might have.

    My thoughts

Cheaper is better-but..............regularly 223 is cheaper than 308 BUT Match grade ammo like federal Gold Match is pretty much the same price in 223 and 308. So depending on if you will shoot a regular or match.

Second will you be killing anything large. 308 will take dear etc.

Exactly why I split the difference and went with the 6.8/.270

I don't plan on doing any hunting, this is pretty much a target rifle.

Buy the .308 then build an AR.

Also, if you are looking for another area to shoot in your area there is some BLM land just south of King City, Williams Hill, cool place that not too may know about.

Very cool, do you have directions, or a way I can look up BLM in the area? King City is really accessible for me since I'm pretty much right here. Also, are there any group get togethers that people plan to visit and shoot at BLMs in the area?

I live in Fresno but grew up in KC. When I go back home to visit friends we usually go shoot up there. I don't think anyone else on calguns knows about this place.

Honestly if you are not familiar with the South Monterey County back country it might be difficult for you to find.

There are two ways to access Williams Hill. One is from the Lockwood area the other is from 101. The access from 101 would be a closer drive for you. If you take 101 (S) 15 minutes past King City you will take the San Ardo exit. Turn right on Paris Valley Road, follow the road up about one mile and it will veer you up and right continue you on Paris Valley Road for a few miles and you will turn left on the first dirt road you see that is not gated off. This dirt road is not listed on the map and it will take you all the way up to Williams Hill. It's about a 20 minute drive up dirt road and I recommend taking a vehicle that is 4WD. You can google williams hill or check the BLM website for more info on the place.

                223 for AR's...

308 for 700's... That's the way it should stay!

Trust me.. Your going to regret getting a 700 in 223. Because once you get good at it and start shooting farther and farther... your going to be like dam I wish I got the 308 now once you get to 600 yards+... The 223 can do it but the 308 can do it better all the way out to 1200. Even seen a video hitting steel at 1500 yards... Wont happen often tho.

I'm still working on 900 yards.

So in conclusion go 308 you'll thank me later.
