Better groupings, but a split casing :(

Got out to the range today, and was a lot more pleased with my groupings. After tuning the trigger way down and practicing on some tips (thanks for the help stan!). I can still improve, but using "Remanufactured" Black Hills 77g HPBT Sierra ammo, I shot this 5 round group! Not THE best, but MY best! Definitely learned the value of 77g in the 1:8 twist barrel...

At one point, I fired a round and it just sounded... different. A lot of smoke came out from the action, and around the bolt. I ejected the casing, and saw this:

I checked my barrel, it was clear. Ran a brush and patch through it to be sure, nice and clear. I could see some very small flecks of brass on the bolt face/extractor. Cleaned everything thoroughly, and debated not shooting anymore of the ammo... But, shot through another 20 with no problems.

Anyway, what causes this? Has anything on the rifle been compromised or weakened? I feel like a worried parent...

I've had that happen to me a few times, twice from ammo I bought and once from a batch of reloads I worked up. Basically what has happened is the brass has been reloaded one too many times, has become weakened and it splits. In my experience it hasn't damaged anything, it can be a pain though especially if the case gets stuck. You did the right thing by checking everything out before shooting again.
A gun, like any other source of power, is a force for either good or evil, being neither in itself, but dependent upon those who possess it.
