    My First AR: Ruger SR-556E

I wanted an AR platform gun, chambered in 5.56/.223 and was piston driven. Ideally I wanted a complete gun, too. Saw the sale for the SR556E at Turners and looked more into it. It seemed to have everything I wanted, and wasn't missing anything I really needed (compared to standard SR556). Great reviews, owners loved em, reviewers loved em, and the price was right (and a good couple hundred less than any other piston AR I could find). Anyway, I pulled the trigger and bought it. 10 days later, picked it up and took it out.

Scope is a Leupold MK AR 3-9x40mm.

Sighted it in today using basic maths and got pretty close after the first adjustment! I was surprised how well 1" box grids help in calculating MOA adjustments (I just kind of eyeballed it with trial and error with my cheapo red dot on my other gun). Had some fun with it afterwards, and it seems like it's still a hair low (but that could just be my point of aim for the head). This was a 25yd range and I think I'll wait till I get to a 100yd range before I do any other adjustments.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share as a happy new Ruger owner.

Nice, I thought about these when I was first looking into an AR platform rifle.

How much did you pay OTD if you don't mind me asking ?

It was on sale for $1099 two weeks ago (which is the "fall sale price" from August 12th to September 15th too, if you're looking to get one). Was about $1210 OTD after tax and DROS. Considering that's still more than 150 bucks south of MSRP, that's not a bad deal at all.

Edit: The mag it comes with is a piece of garbage though. I found a local place that sold 10/20 PMAGs for 22$ and picked up two of those too. So you could add that in if you want.

Also, it comes with no iron sights or optics. I purchased the scope there (they gave me a small discount for buying them together) and picked up some Burris rings for 50$ online from Midway USA.

The complete package was still about 350$ less than the MSRP for a standard SR-556, which comes with rails, nice iron sights, and not much else.

Seriously that is a great deal. . . . Unfortunately, I have been building two lowers so I have spent about 1000 bucks already and I can't even go to the range yet. I prob should have gone with a complete rifle first but, I have been enjoying the building process.

Did that thing come with a P-mag?

          oh, pretty nice groups BTW

I edited my post, but the mag it comes with is some garbage no-name piece of crap. I knew this ahead of time and bought some 10/20s when I was in the area of a shop that sold em cheap(ish) last week.

Niiice rifle but I'm not a fan of the comp.
The liberal see's the glass as half full and tries to take more.
The conservative see's glass as half empty and tries to keep it that way.
I'm with the people on the side just pouring water in the glass trying to get a drink!

Nice piston. My father in law just picked up that scope. I'm thinking of getting the 6-18 older brother. Let us know how it shoots a little further out.

I was wondering, is the barrel the exact same as other sr556 minus the chrome lining or a beefier machine gun quality barrel?

All I can find about the 556E on the website is that it has a "COLD HAMMER-FORGED, MIL-SPEC 41V45 BARREL ensures accuracy and longevity." Which is the same quote used for the standard SR-556.

The paperwork that came with mine is the same as the standard SR-556, and doesn't list anything about the E.

Yeah, sick rifle. The Mini14 flash hider is just there to protect the threads till you get a comp.

I think it's ugly and plan on replacing it with some kind of muzzle break. Suggestions? I don't care about it hiding flash, I want better stability and reduced muzzle climb. The factory break on my M1A works wonders. Is there something like that?
