    Remington 700 LA or SA?

I am very new to Bolt Action Rifles. But for LA or SA, I think it stands for Long Action and Short Action. How can you tell the difference and what is the difference?

Long action is for calibers basically longer than .308 win -- like 30-06 and 300 win mag. The short action 700 is chambered in shorter overall length cartridges, like the .223 and .308. Unless you want a 300 win mag length cartridge, the SA is the way to go.

You need to know something about calibers and the case length. Anything shorter than a 308 is SA. Anything longer than 30-06 is LA.
SA ammo is usually cheaper. I have a Rem 700PSS in 308.

The military is having Remington upgrade all the older 700's to 300 WIN MAG, cheaper that 338 Lapua. The 308 with the right barrel and scope can get you out to 1,000 yards.

This. It's pretty much in the name. One actions longer to fit a longer case. SA on 700's IMO. preferably the classic 308 round.

I prefer short actions, faster bolt manipulation.

Imagine not having to move your head away from your scope.

                  It's milliseconds.

maybe for you, everyone's setup is different. Its timely to reacquire targets freehand in the woods. Especially for a followup shot when you take your cheek off the stock.

It's milliseconds in bolt throw if you're not "on" the rifle and looking through the scope, yes. But fusionstar is also right. Unless you have an extra long eye relief scope and rest your cheek further back on the comb you cannot work the bolt on a LA without removing your cheek from the stock. So you lose sight picture and have to reacquire your target between shots. Not a big deal on the target range but it can slow you down in the field when you're hunting. I don't think I'd let it dictate what caliber I shot, but it's worth noting.
