    Hearing Protection Issue

Greetings Cal-Gunners. I have an issue that I want to throw out to smart people
I have always had an issue when wearing earmuffs and shooting rifles. When I get into position, the stock causes the earmuff to be lifted up and off of my ear. I have tried different things and came to the conclusion that I was just built weird so I just wear a good set of plugs whenever I shoot rifle. Well, I have run into a little bit of a snag.....I am going to Front Sight in two months for a 4-day rifle class and they require you to have electronic hearing protection I can't afford the really expensive elect earplugs so I figure I will just have to use plugs under my elect muffs. Does anybody else have this problem? Any other thoughts on what I could try? Thanks

Maybe send them an Email and see if the surefire earpro will work? They're plugs but they work sort of like an electric. I have E3's and E4's and I love them. Havent tried the E6's though..

ya, it happens to me as well, just wearing earplugs under the earmuffs makes it better. im not really sure what else you could possibly do besides doubling up the ear protection.
BTW, where in visalia do you shoot? I work part time at Kaweah Delta, and the closest place i ever found was Rankin

Completely common problem. I got by at Front Sight with a set of impact sports. Most competitive shooters double up because today's muzzle brakes are ridiculous.

I don't wear earmuffs anymore (I just do plugs because their convenient) but when I shot trap I used to use muffs. The trick was to change my cheekweld to one that was lower on my cheek, and also to tighten up the muffs until they barely covered the bottom of my ears.

I've never heard of anybody requiring electronic protection, but then again, I've never been to Front Sight.

I shoot in Tulare, but I don't think I've ever shot at a "proper" range in the central valley except for the one time I shot in Fresno. I usually make friends with local farmers and go shoot on their land, or along the canals. Never had someone run me out of a place in 15 years of shooting.

you're not weird, I have the same problem

I try to use in ear plugs only when shooting my AR. Just double up and you'll be good.

You can find electronic muffs for $60 on Natchez SS and Midway. I bought a pair that are cutout for a stock and utilize a neck strap for under $60. Add those and foamies you'll be solid and SAFE.

I found these for $60 on sale:

I wear BOTH ear plugs, and ear muffs. Originally due to the safety glasses compromising the seal of the earmuff and letting in sound.

                      And good plugs.

There's a good range out northwest of Visalia. http://www.visaliasportsmans.com/

                      Have fun!

Are the earmuffs you've been using and having problems with the low profile style?

This is a very common problem.

And its the main reason why I don't like Howard Leights. They are far too big and bulky when shooting a rifle.

I prefer the Peltor Tac 6 series. They are slim enough to not interfere with me getting a good stock & cheek weld when shooting a rifle.

Well it's nice to see I'm am not the only one having this issue. Thanks for all your replies.

@motorwerks - I have a set of SureFire plugs and love them.

@alfred1222 - I am a member of the Visalia Sportsmens Assoc. our range is north of Visalia on ave 328 off of Plaza dr. www.visaliasportsmans.com - we are having our monthly meeting tomorrow night at 7pm if you are interested. we have a gun raffle at every meeting

Thanks to the others for the links. I have a set of Howard L's, Radians and Peltor's....all do the same thing. I will have to try the ones with he neck strap again. Think I will end up using my SureFire plugs with my best fitting muffs.

I used to use muffs and had the same problem, particularly in prone. Then I went to plugs, which were fine, until some guy with a .338 Lapua set up next to me. Muffs AND plugs when someone with a muzzle brake is close at hand......
