Panoche hills however no fires but you can spend the night if you'd like. Also it'll be fun walking in the 2.5ish miles from the parking area! -
If you don't want to drive too far you could stay at Sly Park in Pollock Pines. Plenty of places to go shooting off the Mormon Immigrant trail. Also like Scorcher said Eldorado National forest has numerous campgrounds (which Mormon Immigrant trail runs through). Ice House road takes you to several off hwy 50.
Some of the campgrounds are by reservation but most have limited spots that they keep open for first come/first serve. If you can get up there early Friday, stop by the US Forrest office off Forni Rd in Placerville and get a map for the area. The office is to the right of the freeway.
Best bet if you do Ice House road is go up further then the first campgrounds. Those first few tend to get a lot of boaters who are not really great at keeping food in vehicles and they don't have locking containers (bears are plentiful up there). But the upper campgrounds do."I declare to you that woman must not depend upon the protection of man, but must be taught to protect herself, and there I take my stand." --Susan B. Anthony
