I have a bat (baseball) bag in my truck. It holds a mini14, water and a 2 each 72hr food pack. You might also look at a keyboard case.

I have a friend in your situation. He uses a plastic tool box from Home Depot with wheels on it. He takes his AR's apart and packs in a couple of lowers and 3 or 4 uppers with scopes. He stacks another box on top of it with ammo or whatever he needs and wheels it down the apt. hall to his car. Nobody so far has given him a second glance. And it's cheap too.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

I would be more worried about people calling the cops on me then anything.

I'm going to start looking for some bass soft cases, preferably ones with good padding. I might even do a custom job and sew some PALS webbing inside so I can strap my gun tight instead of it bouncing around. Thanks for the ideas guys it really helped!

Do you need quick access to the rifle? If not, then I would just disassemble the upper from lower. Putting it back together takes less than 6 seconds. as two separate parts (depending on your barrel length, and if you have a collapsible stock), you can put them in a much smaller bag. A gym bag...etc.

Oh... I hear ya & I aint gonna be doing it in downtown oakland or SF....but its lawful & so everything I own; so no fears there; been stopped a couple times for (late mail) tag related stuff while they hung....most I ever got was either "Hunting?" or "Are they loaded & mind if I check?" and none ever did check.........

they make a great way to transport to the range if you're just taking one or two guns.... Though I do use a heavy-duty SKB case if I have to haul more...or going further than just to the range.

I don't need quick access but I don't want to separate them either. I just don't want my upper and lower clanking around in a bag and scratching each other.

If it's the clanking and scratching that you're worried about, then maybe there's an easy solution that?

Maybe a small cushion, foam to separate them? or maybe put them in different bags. You know I'm just thinking, there is a tennis racket bag (the ones that hold 2 tennis rackets, has 2 zippers and has a nice cushion between them), could be the solution you are looking for???

The whole purpose of this is so if someone looks into your car, they won't suspect it's a rifle right? Well, who would want to break into your car to steal a tennis racket? But any other long looking bag MIGHT be a gun!

First I'm going to be keeping it my trunk, locked up, and only to and from the range. The problem is carrying from my apt to my car under the watchful eyes of my hippy neighbors.

I know you've said you're looking for a hard case, but in the spirit of the thread, I've heard that some tennis racket cases/bags are just about the perfect size for AR style carbines.

Of course, you'd also have to wear the obligatory short-shorts and sweatband anytime you're going out to the range.

Yamaha keyboard case with a big yamaha logo on the side. Long enough for most rifles, cut foam to fit them tight. And you can tell people you're taking lessons to play the piano. No body will be likely to chat about piano lessons, as much as guitars. and you can put longer guns in one and not have to take them apart. Or just buy a locking hard case and put a big yamaha decal on each side. Bid five sells some discrete hard cases.
