    Question regarding stock cheek weld

Took my son out with me to Angeles on Friday for his first time handling a firearm. He shot my Sig 522 with a NcStar RDS and my BCM Recce style AR buiild with Troy irons and CTR stock. He did pretty well shooting both rifles but noticed that he sometimes had difficultly acquiring the sights.

Will a stock with better cheek weld help him with his difficulty in acquiring a sight picture? I was looking into replacing the CTR with either a Vltor IMod/Emod, Magpul ACS or the RRA CAR Operator stocks if it will help him shoot the rifle more comfortably. Not sure what options i have with the Sig 522 but i'm planning to build a dedicated AR-22 anyway.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, it will help. Think of using a shotgun, you can't be consistent without cheek weld. It might not help changing the stock. If the stock is too low, consider building up your existing stock with Bondo.

LaRue makes a nice piece of kit for the CTR called the RISR (reciprocating inline stock riser.) I have one on my carbine and really like it - it really gives a slightly more natural sight acquisition picture. I wasn't sure if I would like it or not, but after using it for one day, both my wife and I have them on our carbines. Oh and it did not add any noticeable weight.

Here it is on my rifle.

it will help a lot actually. I just live with mine.

My girlfriend is left eye dominant and hates shooting my AR. Im still trying to see how you can shoot a AR for her. Thats a problem.

Thanks guys. That RISR might be a good option instead of replacing the CTR and it looks like it has a higher cheek weld than the other stocks i'm looking to replace the CTR with.

It's definitely worth a shot. You can basically try it out and if you don't like it, sell it on the forums for $5-$10 loss - no big deal. PLUS - you get to keep the Dillo Dust and other LaRue shwag!

I use the 3/4" riser on my MOE and it helps a lot. It's on an AK so it needs some serious height to get in-line with the optic, and it works great.

^Unfortunately, the Magpul MOE/CTR risers would interfere with the charging handle on an AR.

i think the best thing to help him with acquiring a consistent sight picture is more trigger time. shooting a rifle properly is a science. a kiddo can't just hop into it, it takes a lot of rounds downrange. the best thing to do is to go back to the range as often as possible and put that boy behind the wheel! the way i find my most consistent cheek weld is to crane my neck out forward as far as it will go, then lay my cheek straight down on the stock. that way i know my eye is the same distance from the aperture every time (learned that trick at appleseed). as far as the red dot, well, i dont know. i dont use them.

really, i dont think you need to change anything. new eyes with a whole new set of rules and probably stress and excitement get tired easy. i bet some more practice will do a lot of good.

just an opinion in an internet text box. feel free to disregard.

^ I definitely will take him shooting more now that he is interested and more trigger time will surely help. I'm sure that as he gains more experience the issue with sight acquisition will get better. But i also want to make his shooting experience a comfortable one. And thanks for your input, i don't disregard the ones that have merit.
